Daryl pulled me to him with one arm around my waist and stretched out the other. He quickly fired and took out the walker. After fighting off the walker I finally let out the breath I was holding. That was when I realized the little girl was awake and crying. I tried calm her the best I could. "Shhh, sweet heart everything is fine look, open your eyes and see who's waiting here to see you!" she still cried but she opened her eyes and looked around
"MOOMM! MOM!" She jumped out of my arms and ran to her mother who was crying reaching out for her, so happy to finally be reunited with her daughter. "SOPHIA! BABY!" she held her daughter and cried. I smiled, happy at myself for helping the other woman. If it was my own child I'd be the same way. After a minute or two i finally noticed Daryl still had his arm around me. I smiled at him and stepped away as my two little one called out to me and ran head on into my legs hugging me. I picked them up and hugged them tightly.
"It's about time you came back! You had your children worried sick! What kind of mother just leaves there kids like that with strangers! What if we'd a just ran off with them!" Daryl yelled grasping at straws trying to find a way to cover up his concern he obviously held, but there was something else I could see the irritation and jealousy in his eyes. He must have spent a lot of time looking for her before and wanted to find her first. men. go figure.
I sighed and patted his shoulder "They weren't worried I was barely gone that long. They've taken care of themselves for a lot longer before while I've hunted. And besides I knew you weren't going to just take off with my kids. There's mothers here and no value in children. Why would you take children when they can't pull their own weight. Maybe it was you were just worried about if i would return."
I raised an eyebrow at him in question and smiled. He scoffed and walked back to his spot he made for himself by the children's sleeping bags. He must have been watching over them. But why and why was he worried about me, I mean how can he be worried about me, he just met me.
"Come on children time to go to bed" I ushered them to their sleeping bags and tucked them in. "it's time for bed you two and no mischief tonight"
I was standing up and heading to the small camp fire everyone was sitting around when I heard a voice on my cb radio i carried on my belt
"Kathleen are you there, over!"
"grandpa!" the kids yelled and sat in their sleeping bags.
I shh'd them and waved my hand signaling for them to go back to bed while I talked
I picked up the radio and replied "were here over!"
His voice came back through the hand held "That is good to here, how are the little ones, over!"
"They're good we ran into a group of survivors, over!"
He replied, "Well invite them along to safety if they wish to stay, they may. How far are you till you hit base, over!"
"About three days on foot, two in car, over!"
it was about a minute before a reply came "Well it's getting late get some sleep and I'll see you soon. over"
"Goodnight grandpa, over."
He replied back one last time, "Goodnight sweet heart and take care of the little ones, over and out!"
When I turned around I noticed everyone staring at me. They must have been listening to the conversation.
That was when Rick approached me.
