"GOOON!"
As Killua's desperate scream rang out, Gon halted, what was left of his arm still poised. He turned around, his cold amber eyes locking onto Killua's own royal blue ones. For once his expression changed, from distant and bloodthirsty to emotional.
In that last moment of silence, Gon seemed to fill with remorse and sadness. Fill with pain. Tears welled in his eyes as his gaze withered like a dying flower.
It was then that Killua was reminded that this muscle-bound killing machine was his best friend. Many fond memories filled his head, blocking out everything around him.
Like how they met.
We were twelve then, and we met at the Hunter Exam…
"Hey, how old are you?"
"I'm twelve!"
"Huh, twelve years old… same as me. You asked… what my name was?"
"Yeah, but you don't have to answer if you don't want to."
Their adventures during the Exam…
"Gon! I thought you were a goner! How did you find us?"
"I followed Leorio's cologne!"
"You followed his scent? Are you a dog or something?"
…..
"Man! If you didn't want us to come in, you should have locked the door instead of leaving a stupid sign! Huh? Gon?"
"...we got scolded…"
At last, Gon's enormous Janken gave way, causing a burst of white light and a deafening explosion. The force obliterated everything in its path, even causing the trees in the distance to arch backwards.
Killua staggered amidst the destruction-in-progress, putting all of his might into every step he had to take to keep from being thrown back into the collapsing trees. He shielded his face with his arm squinting against the blinding light.
Where's Gon? Please don't let him be…
Killua's eyes flicked around, scanning the faint line of vision for his friend.
But he had disappeared.
Dust from the forest floor whirled around Killua as he stood like a boxer thrown against the ropes.
Killua screamed Gon's name as loud as he could, but his voice was lost in the explosion. The tears that fell from his eyes were instantly blown away, vanishing in the soaring debris.
Finally, as the force pushing him backward grew even stronger, Killua was defeated, physically and emotionally. His arms fell to his sides and his bright, rigid hair died down as he was hurtled back into the wind.
The world around him faded, and suddenly everything was quiet and dark.
Killua was ready to give up.
That is, until he heard a familiar voice calling him. Slowly, he opened his eyes.
It was a beautiful day, with the sun shining and the birds fluttering about, all chirping out their own song. Bright pink petals rained down from the tree that towered avove him. There was Kurapika and Leorio, and in front of them, Gon, holding out his hand and smiling brightly. "Come on, Killua! Let's go!"
Blinking away the sudden tears that brimmed in the corners of his eyes, Killua smiled back. "Right!"
He took Gon's hand, letting the slightly shorter boy lead him. He didn't care where they went, or how far.
He just wanted to let everything free and forget all of the pain they had ever went through.
So he closed his eyes and enjoyed the sweet release, silently hoping he wouldn't wake up.
He wanted to stay like this, happy and with his friends, forever.
