The Broken and Found

Elphaba watched nervously as everyone danced, twirling their dresses in a teasing frolic. She hated it, she didn't even want to be here, yet Glinda had somehow persuaded her against her better judgement to come. As soon as she had walked in she had regretted it.

Glinda laughed softly in a corner with old friends trying to get away and keep Elphaba company in a crowed she obviously wasn't comfortable with. Yet the more she tried to get away, the more impossible it appeared to become. Sam once again came to the rescue giving Glinda a room for a sighed relief. Finally someone was going to talk to the girl.

Sam offered his arm like a gentleman, "May I have this dance or are you otherwise occupied?"

Elphaba took his arm, "Otherwise, but because you dressed up I might make an exception."

They couldn't help but laugh at this, it was a formal event and it would have just been silly to remark otherwise. Sam danced with her easily taking the lead. Elphaba danced quietly until he spun her. She laughed, they'd almost fallen, though the second time Sam spun her they fell on the ground with Elphaba and Sam falling head first next to each other.

Sam laughed softly as they both got up.

Sam leaned in to whisper, "Could I talk to you privately?"

Elphaba paused I surprise, "Yes, you may."

At that Sam took her by then hand and led here to balcony draped in flowers. Elphaba shivered at the cool air and felt Sam put his suit coat around her shoulders.

He sighed softly looking at her determinedly. "Elphaba, I love you and I need to know…do you share my feelings?"

Elphaba's mouth opened slightly wondering where this had come from. "No, I'm sorry, I love you but not like that, you're my friend, my best friend, a brother but not that. I'm sorry Sam, I don't think I could return those feelings."

Sam gave a heart broken smile, "That's fine. I'll still love you not matter what. Even with a shattered heart I'll love you to the end. You'd have to rid me of my heart before I stop feeling this way."

Elphaba moved forward and put a hand on his shoulder but he flinched under her touch and walked away to the dance to sit with a drink in his hand. He spent the rest of that dance staring at the drink in his hand wondering where he could have possibly have gone wrong.

Elphaba stared out at the beautiful view. Why had she come? She only appeared to break hearts, no matter who it was, she always seemed to disappoint. Elphaba gasped in surprise when two arms circled around her pulling her in an embrace with her back pulled against Glinda.

Glinda whispered, "Are you regretting coming?"

Elphaba paused, "Maybe."

Glinda smiled softly, "Thank you for coming for me. I never feel alone with you around and I'm sorry if I hurt you. Tell me what to do to make it up to you my love."

Elphaba sighed, "I just want to go away, I want to fly away and race over the clouds."

Glinda laughed, "I'm sure you would but that's not answering my question Miss Thropp."

Elphaba smiled softly, "I know. I would love just have you hold me, even for the while longer."

Glinda smiled, "That's perfectly fine, I'll hold you forever if you want, promise. I love you too much not too."

Elphaba smiled as she traced her hand over the other girls. "Thank you."
