Winter Wonderland
The night before, there had been a certain nip in the air. A cold, frosty I something that came along every winter, when the ground was solid and the morning brought grass tipped with white. And the sky at sunset had held that certain pearl grey look to it, the clouds pregnant and heavy with water.
Edward and Alphonse Elric had no trouble getting to bed. When their mother came to tuck them in they were already snug in bed, covers pulled up their chins. The window curtains were pulled back as far as they could go, and Trisha Elric simply laughed and left them that way.
When morning came, the curtains were still drawn back from the window and the light creeping into the room completely failed to rouse Ed. Al, however, did the job rather nicely by leaping onto his brother's bed.
"Hey!" Ed flailed and twisted and buried his head under his pillow in an effort to combat the early morning assault of his younger brother. Al was heavy!
"Brother wake up! Broth-er!" Al continued to shake Ed, and the smaller of the two - though not the younger - curled up into a defensive ball. He pulled the covers up over his head - still buried under his pillow.
"Go 'way, I'm sleeping."It was too early to be up. Ed could tell, of course, because the sun wasn't even halfway across the floor. If it hadn't reached his bed then it was too early to get up. There was no force on earth that would rouse Ed from his bed at this hour.
"But brother! It snowed!"
Well, maybe one force on earth. Those were the magic words. Like a hedgehog that had sniffed a treat, Ed uncurled and peered out from over the edge of his blanket to the window. It had snowed. Outside the world was blanketed in sparkling and unblemished white. Even from here Ed could see that it was thick and deep - perfect for all of a young boy's snow-centric needs. Ed grinned as he dropped the covers and sat up, eyes fixed on the smooth and silent snow.
"I knew it would snow today!" Ed exclaimed, leaping out of bed and grabbing at his coat. He could already smell breakfast cooking, but he had no time for breakfast. Not with all of that beautiful clean snow out there! Well, maybe he had time for a
little breakfast. It always took Al so long to get ready.
"Mom, mom, it snowed!" Al announced, following fast on Ed's heels. Ed groaned. Al was supposed to be getting dressed. What did he need breakfast for anyway? He was already bigger than Ed.
"Why do you two think I have breakfast ready so early?" Their mother smiled, laying out their already laden plates for them. "Now eat up. And Ed, don't forget your mittens."
Ten minutes later the untrodden snow was marred with boot prints and furrows and a very Al-shaped lump of snow.
