Prologue: Stubborness
"So, what will you do while I'm out of town?" Will asked as he lovingly looked at his girlfriend.
"I was thinking about taking a walk through the woods with my dog", she replied with a thoughtful look on her face.
"Maibeth", Will said in a scolding tone, "You know I won't be here this evening."
"So?"
"Haven't you heard of the animal attacks near the forest", Will was staring intently into Maibeth's gray eyes.
Maibeth was stunned into silence by the intensity of his eyes and the beauty of his face. Will had the palest skin she had ever seen, golden brown eyes, his complexion so smooth. Every thing about him was perfect. Perfect. How in the world had she ever get a boyfriend like this, she thought to herself.
"Maibeth, Maibeth!" Will said, interrupting Maibeth's thoughts.
"Huh? What?"
"We were talking about the animal attacks, remember?"
"Oh, yeah", Maibeth said finally snapping out of it.
"So, your not going to the woods tonight, right", Will said with a hopeful smile.
"Oh no, I'm going"
"Maibeth", it sounded like Will was scolding her again.
"Okay, three things. One, Courage will be with me. Two, the attacks were near the forest, not in the forest. Finally, three, what could you do to stop an animal so vicious that it had killed five people." Maibeth crossed her arms to seal her argument.
Will ran his hands through his messy black hair. "Fine, three things of my own. One, Courage is a Jack Russell Terrier. Two, it doesn't matter, near is close enough. And three, I can do more than you think I can."
A look of puzzlement crossed Maibeth's face as she stared at Will and as he stared back. "I'm going", she said stubbornly. Then she got up and walked out of the cafeteria as the bell rang.
Will shook his head and sighed in surrender. He walked gracefully and solemnly behind Maibeth. Hunting was going to take place in a new forest tonight.
