There's a thousand words left unspoken between the two of them and the only thing she can say his name; " Mulder."
Seeing his face makes her heart lurch with bittersweet excitement and anxiety. Scully can barely breathe as she looks at his all too familiar face.
There's so much she wants to say but cannot manage to. The words are caught in her throat and she cannot get them out.
" Dana." He says her name so formerly , so coldly it almost feels like an insult. It hurts her. It hurts her heart and she aches to hear the way he used to say 'Scully'. It hurts even more knowing it is her fault she no longer hears it.
Despite the icy formality in Mulder's voice she can see the same pain she feels in his eyes.
Scully doesn't know how to reply. So she just stares at him. Mulder looks absolutely haggard. His hair is unkept and longer than she's ever seen it before. His stubble is half grown out on one half of his face as if he's forgotten to shave the other side.
Mulder looks much older than the last time she saw him- more worn down. And sad. There's an abundant amount of sadness contorting his face. She wonders if that sadness is over her.
After what feels like millennia have passed Mulder speaks again. His voice remains formal, but it just so slightly cracks somberly. Scully can tell he's trying all his might not to show how much emotion he's feeling.
" How are you?"
" I've been okay. I-I'm okay." Scully breathes tonelessly. She wants to cry out about how much she regrets her choice, how much she wants him back but she holds herself down , staying as composed as she can manage. Which isn't much.
Mulder nods his head in reply. " You?" She adds. He gives a shrug.
" I've missed you." She finally manages to push out the next few words caught in her throat. She sounds so much more lovesick than she meant to sound. The composure is quickly leaving her voice.
" Then why did you leave?" Mulder says. There's no formality in his voice now.
" You know why I left." She replies. There's no composure left in hers.
Then they both stare at each other, a gaze mixed with bitterness, sadness and joy. It's such a torture and a blessing to see each other. Both miserable and wonderful.
She wants to last forever, yet also wants it to end. Such a mixture of emotions she feels.
There's no small talk left between them. No, not with the history they have. And they both know that.
" Are you happy now?" He says quietly. Scully swears she sees a glint of a tear in his eyes.
She looks away from Mulder. Scully can't look him in the eyes now . Her former best friend. Her former lover of close to ten years. And she cannot even look at him as he speaks now.
Scully's a little afraid to tell the truth to him.
" No." She says. Because truthfully she hasn't been happy since she left him five years ago.
