It'd been such a long time since she'd played chess. She wasn't sure what she was doing now, holding the white knight between her fingers, when there wasn't anyone to play against. She could play herself, she'd done it before, but she really didn't see the point anymore.
The fire burned pleasantly to her right, and she enjoyed the sounds of its crackling and the sight of the light dancing across the carpeting. She settled herself deeper into the armchair, wondering if it wouldn't just be better to give up and grab a book off the shelves lining the walls.
She heard the sounds of footsteps approaching, and then they settled into the chair across from her with a sigh and a thump.
The leather upholstery creaked as they crossed their legs – she could see their shoes, nice boots with low heels, in her peripheral vision – and asked, "You wanna play?"
She looked at him. He looked vaguely familiar, and she wasn't quite sure what to make of that, since there were quite a few people, both good and bad, that'd evoked that feeling. Most of his curly blond hair was escaping the messy low ponytail he'd put it in. He picked up a black pawn and set it down two spaces ahead.
She set down her knight. "What's your name?" she asked.
"Zach. And yours?"
"Ami," she said.
