Hagrid shuffled along the grey stone corridor, hands shackled in front of him. Four guards surrounded him, leading him further and further into the darkness of the prison. Hagrid tried to keep his eyes off of the other prisoners in the cells on the right. Each of them recognised him however, and called out to him and taunted him. A half-blood, half-breed, they said. An old oaf. And all the while, Hagrid could sense the unnatural cold, tormenting presence of the Dementors, temporarily kept at bay by the human guards.
He was led to the last cell of the ward, his hands freed, he was shoved into the little square cell and the bars clanged shut behind him. Then the Dementors came, and he began to remember the worst memories of his life.
'Hagrid?' a low voice said from close by.
Hagrid couldn't place it. 'Wha'?'
'What are you doing here?' the voice asked, the man seemed irritated.
'Who are yeh?'
'Why are you here?' the man asked again, ignoring Hagrid's question.
'Fer openin' the Chamber o' Secrets - bu' I didn't do it!' Hagrid denied.
The man sighed. 'I believe you,' he said quietly.
'Who are yeh?'
'Do you know Harry?' the man asked, more urgent now.
Hagrid frowned. 'Why d'you want ter know?'
'Do you? Is he ok?'
'He's fine,' Hagrid answered shortly. 'Who are yeh?' he asked stubbornly.
There was a long pause, long enough for Hagrid to think that maybe the other man hadn't heard him. 'I said-'
'I heard you,' the man interrupted. 'I'm-…I'm Sirius Black, remember me?'
There was a gasp of horror from Hagrid and Sirius winced.
'You betrayed Lily and James-'
'I didn't,' Sirius shook his head, though Hagrid couldn't see it. 'I didn't,' he whispered fiercely. 'I'm as innocent as you.'
