"Jaune!"
I turn to face the fast approaching girl. She halts inches in front of my face, her hood fluttering in the wind she created.
"Ruby, how many times do I have to tell you not to wander off on your own? It's too dangerous!" I kick at the log I was sitting on a moment ago. "I can't lose anyone else…"
Ruby immediately looks crestfallen, swaying on her feet. Her head hangs and her gray eyes darken with the weight of my statement.
"Sorry, Jaune..."
I sigh. "Look, I overreacted. I'm just tired. Did you get the firewood already?"
Nodding, she says, "Yeah, I got it earlier today."
"Alright," I push my long bangs behind my ears. "I'm heading to bed, then. See you."
"Bye." Her voice is pensive, a stark contrast from her past self.
Then again, we all had to grow up quick. With Remnant in ruin and expecting a group of teenagers to save it… hah. My life's so screwed up right now.
I enter into my tent that I share with Ren. He's absent so I'm assuming he's out with Nora, probably enduring grueling training.
My body falls on top of my sleeping bag, and I feel myself entering the realm of sleep. Maybe my nightmares will be better than this sad reality.
I wander around a field, slaying monsters. Crocea Mors shines with an unnatural gleam as I behead yet another Grimm. Thoroughly exhausted after killing that final one, I seat myself at the edge of a cliff, dangling my feet over the edge.
"Hello again, Jaune! Mind if I join you?"
I know that polite greeting anywhere.
"Pyrrha?" I ask, rubbing my eyes.
She sits beside me, flashing a brilliant smile. "Nice to see you."
"I'm dreaming, aren't I?" I ask her.
"Perhaps. But who's to say this isn't real?"
I grunt. "You always were a lot smarter than me, Pyrr…"
"Jaune, you know why I'm here."
"Because you missed me?"
A giggle escapes from her mouth. She leans in closer to me; a warm feeling flows across my entire body.
"Indeed I did. But you know that's not it. You need to forget about me Jaune and move on."
"I can't." Tears begin rolling down my cheeks. "How can I forget about you when I love you so much?"
The beautiful warrior wipes my tears away with her slender hands. I relax into her touch and shudder.
"Jaune, I'll always love you. You know that. But your mourning is causing those around you to suffer." She pauses for a brief moment. "Especially Ruby."
"I know but I just can't…"
"Shhh…" she interjects. "Just promise me you'll try."
"I promise."
"That's all I'm asking," Pyrrha says, rubbing her fingers through my hair softly.
I feel myself slipping away from consciousness once more.
"Good-bye again, Jaune…"
The morning sunlight streams in through the folds in the tent. I stretch and exit the makeshift lodge, careful not to step on my sleeping friend. Gazing around the campsite, I see Ruby sitting on a log near the fire-pit.
My sword loudly clanging against my side draws her attention to me.
"Ah. Good morning, Jaune."
"Morning. You, uh, wanna eat breakfast together?"
"That's sounds nice." She beams at me and heads off to grab some food from her tent.
See, Pyrrha. I'm trying to keep our promise.
Just like I said I would.
