Title: but a bang
Series: "Supernatural"
Disclaimer: Eric Kripke owns, yessir.
Warnings: SPOILERS. Abandon All Hope tag. Language.
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Dean, Sam. Mentions of possible Dean/Jo (I know, right?)
Rating: PG-13/T.
Other: Um. Okay. I cried, okay? I can admit it, even if I didn't like Jo. Loved Ellen, though. Say it with me: epic death scene. Kicked the FUCK out of Dean and Sam's death scenes. Title is a bastardization of the saying "the world ends not with a bang, but a whimper." (See where I got it? y/y?)

Dean starts to cry even before they get to Bobby's.

Sam's in the driver's seat since Dean has a concussion after Lucifer sent him flying into the tree. They're coming down from the high of adrenaline with no time to mourn from the moment the bomb went off, what with them having bigger issues to deal with (namely, Lucifer), 'til now. Now, with nothing left to sustain their minds, grief sets in.

It starts when Dean's breath hitches. His brother lifts his head, face upturned towards the roof of the Impala and he blinks several times, as if trying to fight off tears. Then, his shoulders shake and his chest shudders and before Sam knows it, his brother is sobbing soundlessly, one hand over his mouth, eyes shut tight.

Naturally, this sets Sam off.

Sam abruptly pulls the Impala over and kills the engine. He grabs onto Dean and just let's loose all of his grief into Dean's shoulder. Dean doesn't fight him – even puts his arms around Sam. Sam understands. He understands. He saw Dean and Jo in the kitchen the night before. He fucking understands.

The Colt doesn't work. They failed. Jo and Ellen died in vain, torn apart by hellhounds and blown skyhigh just so Sam and Dean could end this goddamn war.

"What do we do, Dean?" Sam asks his brother, breath hitching.

Dean clutches Sam tighter to him. "I don't know, Sammy," his brother whispers. "I don't fucking know."
