This could be interpreted as a friendship-fic… or really mild-slash XD

"Leaving?"

The word was breathed; a silent push of air, but it was enough to hit John hard. The agent cringed and nodded before turning back to his suitcase.

Anger took over the demon's dazed stare,
"But, you can't!" he snapped moving close to the agent, his stone hand came crashing down on the case's lid, startling John whose hands flew away before they were severely damaged.

Blinking at his now dented suitcase John narrowed his eyes on Hellboy, who continued to stare accusingly at the smaller man.
"Red…" sighed John; a hand went his temple, rubbing furiously. "I don't have a choice"

"Hell, you don't!" roared Hellboy clenching both his stone and flesh hands. "You can't just leave!"

The younger man growled; a habit he had picked up from the red demon from the past two years they had worked side by side. John held back sharp words and calmed himself before turning back to Hellboy.
"I've been transferred… I'm not needed here anymore Red-"

"Bullshit!" snarled Hellboy, a large stone finger prodding John harshly in the chest, enough to bruise "You know as well as anyone here that you're needed here Myers! You keep Abe company! You keep Manning off our backs! Damn it, you keep me and Liz from tearing each other apart-"

"So? Someone will just replace me!" snapped the agent, overpowering the demon's voice, but before Hellboy could protest John spoke again, "Listen… it's not just the transfer" he muttered averting his dark eyes.

The sudden serious tone threw Hellboy, his jaw snapped closed as he impatiently waited for John to continue. Taking the silence as his queue, the agent sighed, "You know about my parents… right?"

Hellboy felt his stomach twist sharply. He still felt guilty. He had sifted through John's file to find a birth-date so he could throw a party for the agent; he had found it without blinking but the curiosity of his cats must have rubbed off on him; he had dived deeper and had found things he quickly regretted, things he would have rather heard from his liaison first hand.

John closed his eyes, wishing none of this were happening. In all truth he wanted to stay. After losing his parents, Uncle Thad to cancer and his love Laura to the city life, the agent had rebuilt his family with the BPRD.

Now he was being torn away from his new family, for remnants of his old one.
"There have been… several more disappearances… none are connected… but…" Agent Myers took a deep breath "I've been offered a place on the case…"

A sad, resigned sigh told the agent he had won, but he didn't feel it, his throat tightened and his eyes dove to floor. Maybe he could refuse the offer? His parents were gone, he had accepted that… but…

"We'll miss you kid…"

Hellboy moved forward, wrapping his large stone arm around his friend's chest, giving the agent a half-hug. John instinctively let his head fall on Hellboy's shoulder, and returned the silent hug.

There was a comfortable moment before John pulled away and looking up into the demon's face, confidence in his young man's eyes.
"I'm coming back Hellboy… My family's here."

A smile tugged at Hellboy's lips as he looked down at his liaison, but it fell away when he remembered the human's smile would no longer brighten up the dull Bureau walls.

"You better Myers… 'cause I won't hesitate to track you down"

"I'll be back, trust me"
