Title: One Tear
Pairing: N/A
Disclaimer: I don't own it.
Summary: It was one small tear that fell. Just one. But within this one droplet was the world.

Author's Note: Ok, so... this is relatively pointless. I read the last volume of PSOH today for the second time and realized that D was crying when he pushed Leon off the boat. Yeah, I know, I'm pretty stupid. But it gave me inspiration for this silly little thing. It has no meaning, nothing significant. I just... wanted to write it. And if you think about it, Sofu D did say that D's child was human. So perhaps... who knows? There might be hope in the future, right?
It was one small tear that fell. Just one. It did not land in any specific place, nor did it symbolize one certain thing. No, it was just a single tear that fell.
But within this one droplet was the world. It held powerful emotions that his sub-conscious could not (or would not) react to. It was full of hate but also of admiration and bitterness and loss.
A hatred so deep that it would cover many oceans. It would soak into the earth and still float through the atmosphere; a hatred that lasted through time and ended by one simple teardrop.
As Count D watched Leon fall from the ship that day, he remembered what his grandfather had said. "My son… you have given birth to a human child. No matter how many you betrayed and killed, it was your wish to be reborn as one of them."
Perhaps now, the hatred could stop. It was a slight chance, one that the Count was willing to take. By having a human son, it was possible that the silent war between humans and animals could be completely stopped. That peace could be found and endangered species resurrected. And maybe, just maybe, the path of destruction that mankind had led would soon become a road to salvation.
And now, seeing the detective fall back to earth, he felt another tear fall from his eyes and watched as it cascaded down to Leon's motionless form.
Yes, there was great bitterness in D's heart; the detective had been a friend, albeit a strange one. He had never met a human so stubborn, yet so open-minded (when forced, of course.) He admired the blonde man's strength and wished that he could possess some of the pig-headedness that the other had. He would miss Leon, that was quite certain.
Soon, he could no longer see the detective's form and heaved a great sigh. He turned to the pets who watched in silence. They understood D's sacrifice, knew that it had to be done. But what they did not expect were his soft words as he looked over his shoulder on last time.
"You and I shall meet again, Leon Orcot. And perhaps this time, you will be accepted into paradise…"
He smiled at all the pets once; they saw great sadness is that smile, even if an outsider would see it merely as an all-knowing, self-satisfying grin.
"I believe it is time to set up shop, my friends. Where shall we go now?"
A/N: Yes, well... again, the ending tends to be really bad. But I like it, out of all my PSOH fics. So please read and review and tell me what you think! And flames will be given to my deceased lava lamp so it can live again!
