BASED ON THE SONG 'LOST WITHOUT YOU' BY FREYA RIDINGS

Magnus had blinked. Blinked and in that time this world had shattered, crumbling around him in a matter of moments. Alec had stood a few feet from him, his blue eyes jubilant with victory and he had begun to skirt around the fallen bodies of the attacking forsaken when he had froze. Froze like someone had yanked him backward. Froze like someone had cast a spell on him. But the stain of red that bloomed from his chest like a poisonous rose had not been an illusion. The other Jace behind him had not been an illusion. The shrieks of their children had not been an illusion. Magnus's rage had most definitly not been an illusion, his magic flowing like an undiluting torrent of lightning, slamming into the other Jace like a tidal wave. He had not cared that he looked like their friend.

All that mattered was Alec. Alec laughing. Alec cryining. Alec screaming. Alec dancing. Alec. Alec. Alec. He had poured every ounce of magic into healing him. Every ounce of magic until there was none left and would never be any ever again because Alec was gone.

Alec smiling. Alec running. Alec playing with the kids. Alec giving him strength. Everything was Alec which meant there was nothing. Alec gone.

Alec had said he would fight to stay with Magnus for as long as a mortal could. And that monster who wore Jace's face and had some of Jace's memories had won. Twisting the sword in Alec's back as Alec fought alongside the man who he thought was his parabatai. Magnus was crying, the tears wetting Alec's cheeks. Magnus was pleading, his voice low and rough.

He heard Max and Rafe sprinting for help, he heard them return and he heard the stifled cries of his friends. He heard everything. Everything but Alec. Alec lying so pale and still in his arms, not breathing, heart not beating and those eyes Magnus loved were closed never to open again.

He saw Clary reel back into Jace's arms at the sight of the prone interloper, he saw Isabelle pull Max and Rafe into her arms as she cried and he saw Jace press a hand over his bleeding rune. Simon was murmuring prayers and assurances into Isabelle's ear.

Everything would be alright.

It wouldn't.

It never would again.

Because Alec was gone

And Magnus was lost.

I originally had this as completed but I have decided to add a couple of other chapters! By the way, the 'other Jace' is the Jace from Thule in TDA and Ghosts of the Shadowmarket.

All characters belong to Cassandra Clare.
