I woke in the medical bay of the Battlestar Galactica. I heard voices behind the bluish curtain in front of me. One, I recognized as Doc Cottle, another as Lee Adama, and a third as the Old Man.

"So you're saying that…she's been raped?" Lee asked softly, obviously not buying it. Neither did I, I thought grimly.

"No," Cottle said crabbily. "I'm saying that the girl is a frakkin' whore who went out and slept with every man in the Colonial Fleet!"

"Major Cottle," the old man warned. "Say what you mean, before I have to go ask Kara herself."

"Yes, she's pregnant. Yes, it's a Cylon. Yes, I'm almost positive she was raped."

My throat tightened. My Gods…no, it couldn't be true! I sat up sharply, and Cottle must have heard me. "Shhhhhh!" he hissed. I could almost hear him slapping on his fake smile before he walked in.

"Morning Starbuck, how do you feel?"

"How do I feel," I repeated flatly. "I look like hell, and I feel worse. You wanna tell me what all this talk I just heard is about?"

"Ah…" Cottle floundered for a moment before I heard Lee sigh in exasperation and walk in.

"The doc here says that he tested you for a pregnancy and…he says you tested positive. And he thinks it may be a Cylon," Lee said softly, taking my hand gently. This wasn't like Lee at all, I thought frantically. It must be true…

"Get. Me. An. Abortion," I hissed at Cottle.

"No!" It didn't come from Cottle…it came from Lee.

"Why the frak not!" I shouted, furious that I couldn't have what I needed.

"Come for a walk with me and I'll tell you," he said. Uh-oh…I knew what this meant. Big long talk about Zak, and life, and maybe a quote from the old man here or there.

With a resigned sigh, I swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed, ignoring Cottle's protests. "Let's go, Lee."

He took my arm and supported me, a strangely comforting presence. I resisted the urge to put my head on his shoulder as we walked through the cold, clammy confines of the Battlestar. "Kara, this child, no matter the evils of the parent should be able to live. Did Zak ever tell you his favorite quote?"

He had; 'The greatest thing you can ever give someone is a chance.' "Yes, he did."

"The greatest thing you can ever give someone is a chance. Kara, the baby...it needs a chance."

"No!" I said vehemently, pulling away from him. "No! This baby is not a 'someone'! It's a frakkin' toaster! It's...it's a monster!"

"No," he said softly. "No, I knew telling you this was a bad idea." He sighed. "Dammit Kara, do you really believe in the sins of the father?"

"Yes," I said, tears stinging my eyes. "Yes I do." I stared down at my hands in painful memory. I had always believed in the sins of the father...my own father, and my mother too.
