One Last Time
Temperance Brennan & Seeley Booth
One-Shot
Flashback:
Special Agent Seeley Booth: Been out to your mother's grave?
Dr. Temperance Brennan: No. Why would I?
Special Agent Seeley Booth: To connect.
Dr. Temperance Brennan: She's dead, Booth. Dead, as in 'gone from this world'.
Special Agent Seeley Booth: You know what? Fine. Forget it.
Dr. Temperance Brennan: Excuse me. I'm curious. Do you talk to the headstone? I mean, what do you say?
Special Agent Seeley Booth: It looks like I'm talking to the headstone, but what I'm really saying is-Forget where the words are directed. What I say is that I remember them.
Dr. Temperance Brennan: They can't hear you, because they're dead.
~X~
The light breeze gently pushed her hair beyond her shoulders. Her nose was a light pink along with her cheeks. Her lips were chapped and she was positive she was going to get sick. Days like these were her favorites. The leaves crunching beneath her feet and the sound sound of a light rain hitting the concrete.
But today, today made her hate this time of year. Today marked the one year death of her partner and best friend. She walked between the headstones until coming to a stop in front of the concrete reminder of pain.
Special Agent Seeley Booth
Beloved father, partner, and friend.
Tightly gripping the Cocky belt buckle in her frozen hand she knelt down and gently placed her hand on the stone.
"I used to think this was stupid." She whispered. "But I-" Choking back a sob she ran her thumb across the buckle and chuckled. "It's hard, you know? They assigned me a new partner last week. I can't do it. I've decided to take a job at the college. It'll be easier there."
Pausing she sniffed. "I'm so sorry. It's my fault you're here. I shouldn't have been so stubborn." Tears leaked freely from her eyes. "You used to piss me off so much. No one angered me as much as you do-did. You were my rock, my savior."
The wind had picked up by now. The weather dropping well below 50. Her body shook, whether it was from the cold or her sobs, she wasn't sure. "I miss you." She whispered. "I just fucking miss you."
"I never got to say it before, but I love you. I love you. I never said it because I-I was scared. I was so scared. Everyone I loved has left me. I didn't want to lose you, but I did. I did lose you. And I never got to say it. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
She knew she wouldn't be able to come back anytime soon.
"Goodbye, Seeley." She whispered numbly placing the cocky belt buckle and her new book with the first page reading,
'Dedicated the strongest, bravest, man I've ever had the privilege of knowing and loving.
Special Agent Seeley Booth."
Near his gravestone.
"I love you." And as she walked away the wind blew her words away.
How was that? My first Bones one-shot.
