Alexander, during one of his daydreams, had decided he and Hephaestion needed to take a ride on a beautiful May day. He quickly finished his work and went looking for his lover.

After some searching, he found him at his desk in his rooms, writing a letter.

"Joy to you, Lover," he wrapped his arms around the other man's neck.

"Have you gotten into the wine again, Alexander?" Hephaestion joked after a quick kiss, "And this early in the morning? Shame," he grinned as he continued to write.

"You wound me, Dearest," Alexander pouted, "I was thinking how nice it is today, and that we need a ride. Care to join me?"

"In a moment, Love. Just let me finish this letter."

"Letter? To whom?"

"My mother," Hephaestion's voice thickened with tears and a few stray drops fell onto the paper.

"Oh Love, shh..." Alexander took his soulmate into his arms and hushed him as he sobbed, "She's in the Elysian Fields, waiting for us to join her. It's all right, shh..."

"I miss her, Xander! It's been five whole years, and it still hurts!"

"I know Love, I know. Shh..." Alexander pet Hephaestion's hair as he held him, "Go on and cry, you're safe."

Instead of going for a ride like Alexander had hoped, they stayed inside, in bed. It was as they were cuddled together that Alexander remembered what day it was. Every year, on this day in particular, Hephaestion would write a letter to his mother and then put it in a small chest hidden under his bed. As he thought all of this, Alexander mentally kicked himself for not remembering and being there for Hephaestion from the beginning.

Hephaestion began to weep again and call for his mother and Alexander alike, and Alexander held him tighter, nearly crushing him to his chest, whispering soothingly to him. Finally, as night began to fall, Hephaestion fell into an exhausted sleep, and Alexander was able to breathe in relief. This happened every spring during the rituals to Gaia and Rhea. There was only one promise Alexander could make and keep to his beloved.

"Your mother will always love you, and so will I. My beautiful Phai..." and then he dropped off to sleep next to the man he loved with all his soul.
