She wandered through the thick forest which surrounded the small town of Storybrooke, her fingers brushing against the moss covered trees as she passed while she glanced towards the sky, gazing up at the shining orb which offered a little light in the dark night sky. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips, her expression smoothing to one of complete contentment though, unknown to her, she was being watched from the shadows.
He had been watching her from afar for years.
Never aging; never changing.
Unlike all the townspeople, who either feared him or hated him, she showed him complete and utter kindness. At the same time, every day, she would come down to his pawnshop to speak to him with two cups of tea and a dessert of some sort. Sometimes, she would even invite him around to her small apartment for a home cooked meal which caused the tongues of all the locals to wag but she didn't care.
Instead, she would continue to do so which caused him great pain.
He could still remember everything.
He could remember when he was the 'Dark One' and she was a 'Child of the Moon'; it pained him to know that she may never remember him like, not unless the curse was broken.
That damn curse, the one obstacle that was keeping them apart.
With a small sigh, he closed his eyes and allowed his mind to travel back.
To remember how they once were.
Perching on the roof of the grand estate, Luna silently basked in the mystical silver glow of the moonlight, smooth melodies flowing from the end of her panflute and wrapping themselves around her. Their embrace, as well as the thick emerald cloak she had commandeered from him, kept her shielded from the cool breeze which blew through the enchanted forest. To him, it appeared as though the trees were dancing along to her.
Unknown to that young woman, a pair of golden eyes were watching her from the shadows, gleaming affectionately in the dim light provided by her namesake and creator. To him, she was the most beautiful creature he had ever managed to capture.
Her hair flowed down her back in soft curls of pure chocolate, shimmering ever so slightly as they swayed from side to side. Her skin, as delicate as porcelain, seemed to glow as she sat there playing her instrument; the white velvet gown he had given her complimented her complexion flawlessly, serving as a subtle but constant reminder as to what she was.
The only thing in the entire kingdom which could possibly destroy him.
In the decades that she had been his prisoner/companion/lover, his heart had been won over by her a thousand different times though their souls could never truly be combined in the way that they both craved them to be.
His was nothing more than a festering shadow upon his heart; despite his golden skin and topaz eyes, he was the furthest thing from precious.
However, hers was made of pure moonlight; it's intensity was more than enough to kill the darkness within him, making her the greatest threat he had ever had and yet, that still wasn't a good enough reason to release her.
Shaking his head to rid himself of such thoughts, he carefully crept towards her with the hope that he may catch her off guard but alas, that didn't happen. The moment he stepped into the beam of silver light, the music stopped and before he knew it, he was staring into the bottomless blue eyes of his lover. Unlike any other who knew of him, her painted lips pulled up at the corner into a soft smile as she approaches him, her hips swaying in an almost seductive manner though their gazes never strayed from the others.
"Rumple... To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?" she asked, still gliding towards him. It never ceased to amaze him how she could force the light to move along with her, making the single beam track her path towards him. Once she was a few inches away, her arms wound themselves around his neck, pressing them together while his hands clutched at the material covering her hips.
"I saw that my wayward moonbeam had left the library, despite my ordering her to stay there so I came to look for you." he whispered, his scaly lips brushing against her ear briefly as he spoke. His warm breath was enough to send a single shiver down her spine, causing her to tremble in his arms though that only caused him to grin at the effect he had on her.
Her eyes had fluttered closed, hiding the vast ocean from his piercing view, and her lips were slightly parted.
"My love..."
"Ah ah ah. None of that foolishness tonight dearest. I do believe that you were going to sing a little song for me. That was our deal."
"But, for a song of mine, a story of yours is to be given in return." Luna reminded him, pressing a kiss to the underside of his jaw. With a nod, she beamed brightly then pulled away before raising the silver instrument to her lips. A moment later, the sweetest melody wrapped itself around his head, causing his eyes to shut while it crashed over him like an ocean.
"Of all of my children, the best is the stage where on it's floors I see the moonlight. The tendrils of summer are the ones that still stay with white oceans so wide, winged rays of pale moonlight. Please, take me back to my real home." The young woman sang, pulling the man out of his trance. His eyes remained glued to her as he leant heavily on his cane, his leg throbbing from standing for a prolonged amount of time but he couldn't care less.
Sighing quietly, she turned around, only to freeze at the sight of him.
For a moment, she swore that her friend's skin had taken on a golden shimmer, his eyes no longer a deep hazelnut colour but a bright topaz however, when she took a step closer to make sure, he was back to his normal self.
Mr Gold, the pawnbroker, her only friend in the entire town, the man she had grown so attached to over the years. The man she had grown to love; not the man who had haunted hr dreams for God knows how long.
"M-Mr Gold... W-What are you doing here?" she stuttered, her cheeks darkening a deep crimson colour at the realisation that he had heard her singing. Instead of answering, he limped over the few feet separating them then rested his hand upon her cheek, his thumb caressing her skin softly.
"Please... Tell me that you remember me." He pleaded, gazing deeply into her eyes but they only seemed to show confusion. She had no idea what he was speaking about.
"Of course I remember you... We have tea everyday."
"Not that!" he snapped, growling quietly but he quickly fell silent when she took a step backward, startled. Sighing, he tried again but kept his voice low as not to frighten her anymore. "Do you have strange dreams dearest? Things that you can't explain?"
How had he know?
How could he have possibly known about what caused her to wake up with tears running down her cheeks and her heart aching?
She felt bound tightly to the man who waited there in the night for her... The golden imp with matted hair.
"Y-Yeah."
"Do you know who I am?"
"M-Mr G-G-Gold."
"Think again."
How could he possibly expect her to think when he was standing so close to her?
The feeling of his hand on her skin, the gentlest touches he was giving her, was enough to distract her so completely that she had to force herself to focus just so she knew what he was saying.
Staring at him, Luna thought back to the dream that had pushed her into the forest that evening.
She had been sitting beside a grand old fireplace, settled down in the arms of her lover while he whispered calmly to her, his voice warm and a slight Scottish accent drizzled over his words like melted honey.
"There was once this young lady whose soul was made entirely of moonlight and she wished to make a deal with the dark trickster of the land. Upon asking her what it was that she so desired, the one thing which filled her heart to the point of wanting his help, she responded ever so plainly. 'I no longer wish to belong to my mother'. Of course, the lonely imp was confused but he couldn't allow such an opportunity to flitter by so he struck a bargain with her. 'I will free you from your mother's possession... but to be free from her, you must bind yourself to me.'"
"She must have been terrified." Luna teased, smiling as his arms tightened their hold around her, pulling her closer so she could rest comfortably against his chest.
"At first, it appeared so Deary. She barely left the room that he'd given to her and when she did, it was only to eat or spend time on the roof at night where she would gaze up at the moon. Then, as time ticked by, she grew to accept her situation and from there, a beautiful friendship bloomed though the trickster found himself lacking something. He had fallen in love with the maiden of the moonlight. However, for once in his long life, luck appeared to be in his favour as..."
"She returned the feelings he harboured for her. The love between them only grew, making their powers weaker. Golden scales slowly turned to flesh; white hair darkened to a deep mahogany brown yet neither of them could bring themselves to care. The only thing that mattered was the love which they shared." Gold murmured softly, breaking her out of the reservoir she found herself falling in to.
Realisation crashed over her like an icy wave as she stared up at him; everything came flooding back.
The songs.
The stories.
The nights where they would both lay beneath the moon and whisper kind words to the other.
When he would sit at his wheel, snapping playfully at her to fetch him more straw so he could spin more gold than he could ever spend.
"Rumpelstiltskin..."
"Luanna..."
"My Rumpelstiltskin!" She squealed happily with a wide grin, throwing herself into his open arms before burying her face into the side of his neck. He chuckled happily as relief filled his body. It felt amazing to have her back in his arms, where she belonged, once again.
"I think you shall find, Deary, that you belong to me."
"I c-can't... You were... he was... oh, I missed you so much." she whispered, nuzzling her nose into the side of his neck.
"I missed you too Deary. I missed you too."
