"Stiles?"
"Sssh."
"Stiles, what's going on?"
"Lydia, please, be quiet."
Lydia's back is pressed against the cool wall, it seems the temperature of the room has dropped in the last couple of seconds; and yet she can feel the warmth from Stiles' body pressing against hers. She can feel him shaking, and she's probably shaking as well… but with what's to come, who wouldn't?
She can't explain it, but there's a dread creeping up from her toes all the way up to her spine, spreading out everywhere through her body and to the ends of her hair. She knows that feeling by now and she holds on tighter to the body that's keeping her safe.
"Stiles… stay."
Her voice is low, breathy, and shaky… her chest simply aches… She feels the inevitability of what's to come and she refuses to find resignation in it.
"Look at me, Stiles. Stiles!"
The boy raises his face, the flickering lights show the sweat in his forehead and they show that same awareness, that same inevitability in his eyes and she's terrified of also finding resignation there, so she closes her eyes and breathes in. She feels his hands moving from their protective position in the sides of her head to her hair, she feels his breath getting steadier as his hands move until he's holding her face.
"I'm sorry, Lydia."
She shakes her head, her body is the only one shaking right now and she can hear her pulse in her ears. The inevitable is coming, and she's running out of time.
"You don't need to do anything, they are going to be okay. You said you'd stay with me, you promised Scott."
She hears the desperation in her voice, she doesn't care, she needs him to stay, she already lost Allison… she can't lose him too.
"I can't just leave them there, I just can't. He's my brother, Lydia. I can't stay here while they are out there risking their lives. I just can't."
Tears fall from their eyes and Lydia starts to feel that resignation, like a curse, steady and unavoidable. She feels cold now too, foreign to the moment happening, unattached, disassociated. She's going to lose him, she knows that now. There's no way around it.
"Lydia, I have to go."
His voice is strong and steady, he's determined, he's surrendered to what fate will bring his way and she hates it, and she wants to hate him too, she really does... but she can't, she understands, she knows he's all about loyalty that's why she – well, it doesn't matter now, nothing does.
She looses her grip and lets him go, her eyes closed. There's a moment of silence, of time being stopped, of particles of dust being suspended in mid-air and her heart rate slows down. Her body is getting ready for it… She can feel him breathing, so close, so far, and then his lips are on hers and it feels like closure, like a seal, a deal being closed. And suddenly he's not there anymore, he's gone.
And she screams out his name.
