Made of Diamonds

I sat down heavily on my couch at home, my head in my hands. I'd actually done it. I'd broken up with her, the silly girl. All she wanted were dresses and material possessions. She didn't seem to care about me. If I'd just up and left she wouldn't have batted an eyelash.

Thank goodness it was over.

At that moment the phone rang. It was Manny, he and the rest of the guys wanted to play football on the field by the woods, and would I like to play quarterback. Of course I would. I was a bit worried, seeing as how it was bear season and the bears would be looking for food to eat. But I agreed, put on my denim jacket to fend off the biting cold, and jogged the three blocks to Chesterfield Park.

In the second quarter, Barry threw a long one that bounced into the woods. I knew that I was good at bushwhacking so I went after the ball. It turned out that there was a fair sized hill in the woods, and the ball rolled down it. Against the dead oak leaves on the ground the ball would be rather well camouflaged, and would lengthen the search, but I didn't care. At the very bottom of the hill there were many bushes. I searched through each one and couldn't find it.

Then I heard the playful grunting and growling.

It was two bear cubs. They had found the ball and were jumping on top of it, gnawing on its ends. Now, being the city boy that I was, the fact that cubs travelled with their moms had never really been explained to me. I also figured that since they were so small and adorable, it couldn't hurt to try and retrieve the ball from them.

I had crossed the line before I had taken three steps.

A huge grizzly bear was galloping towards me, roaring louder than anything I had ever heard. The bear stood up on her hind legs, and even though I had over 200 pounds of muscle on me, this bear had to have weighed at least four times that. She roared again, and basically fell on me, her claws ripping at my face and chest. I tried hitting her on the nose, and that made her back off for a bit. In those few seconds, I heard Manny yell "Go get someone, go get help." And then I heard a lot of people run off. And I was alone with the bear.

It felt like hours before I gave up. I was verging on unconsciousness.

Then I heard her scream. It was a terrible, yet beautiful sound. I didn't know who Henry was, but I didn't care. I tried to tell her to go away, to stay safe, but it just came out as a strangled yell. This beautiful lady seemed to sparkle, and I realized she was an angel who had come to take me away to heaven, I was sure of it. Even still, I felt like I needed to get away from the bear, if only to speak to this lady, this angel made of diamonds. I didn't need to be carried away to heaven if I could just stay with her forever.

The bear swiped at my face again, just before it was lifted off me somehow. I felt a leap of fear when I saw that it was the angel throwing it, but I was so tired that I couldn't move, couldn't scream anymore. I was dizzy from blood loss, and most of my bones felt broken. My entire body screamed.

I saw the angel move blindingly fast towards me, and I realized I was in her arms, and she was taking me away. I felt her sobbing. I didn't want her to cry.

I felt the ground beneath me again. I heard her whisper in my ear: "My name is Rosalie Cullen. And I won't let you die."
