To say she was surprised was putting it lightly.
Sam looked at the paper in her hand, checking the address she'd been given again. This had to be the place. Finally she shoved the paper into her pocket and trotted up the driveway. It was a beautiful house, with two stories and a sprawling, lush looking lawn.
Finally she reached the door and knocked on it. She could hear a screeching sound from inside, followed by an indignant wail, and her brow furrowed. What on earth…?
The door swung open, and Sam came face to face with Fiona Glenanne.
Fiona's smile quickly disappeared when she realized who was standing in front of her. "Samantha. What are you doing here?"
"I just came by to see Michael…" Her voice trailed off as she caught sight of Fiona's swollen stomach. "Wow. You look nice."
Fiona absently touched her stomach. "Thank you."
There was another screech, and Fiona looked over her shoulder. "Connor! Michael! Leave James alone!"
Samantha's eyes widened.
Finally Fiona turned back to Samantha. "Sorry about that. The boys tend to act up when Michael isn't home."
"Boys…?"
Fiona nodded and leaned against the door. "Michael Jr. is five, Connor is three, and James is eighteen months old."
Samantha nodded at Fiona's protruding belly. "How far along are you?"
"Seven months.
"Wow." Samantha shifted uncomfortably. "Is… When is Michael coming back?"
"He should be…" Fiona's eyes lit up when the Charger pulled into the driveway. "Here he is."
Samantha turned around and watched Michael get out of the car. He was just as handsome and stylish as she remembered, but something about him was different.
Michael closed the car door and started toward the house. But when he saw Samantha, he froze. "Sam?"
"Hi, Michael."
"I thought I told you not to come back to Miami."
"You did. I'm here in a business trip."
Still uncertain, Michael trotted up to Fiona. Brushing his hand against her swollen abdomen, he kissed her sweetly. "How are you feeling, Fi?"
"I'm fine. But your boys have been driving me insane."
He smiled. "Why is it that when they're in trouble, they're my boys?"
"Because they take after you."
"I'm not the only troublemaker in this marriage, Fi." He smoothed her hair back with a grin.
She struck him solidly in the abdomen. Then she gave Samantha a look before she leaned up and kissed Michael deeply. They broke apart after a minute, and she said, "I have to get the chicken out of the oven."
"Go ahead." He kissed her forehead and gently ushered her inside. Then he turned to face Samantha.
Samantha shifted uncomfortably. "You look…happy."
"I am. Why are you here, Sam?"
She had every intention of coming to him and trying to rekindle what they had, but the wedding band on his finger told her that she was too late. He loved Fiona enough to marry her and have children with her. And Michael was a loyal man. She didn't have a chance. If she had shown up years ago, after leaving Miami, maybe. But not anymore.
"Samantha…"
Slowly she took a step back, a sad look in her eyes. "I made a mistake coming here. I'm sorry." She turned around, ignoring Michael as he called her name.
Whatever it was they had felt, it was obviously gone, replaced by a sense of regret and missed opportunities that laid heavy on her heart.
She finally reached the car, and as she drove away from the house, she looked into the review mirror and saw Michael still standing outside.
"Goodbye, Michael."
The End!
