Fast Forward
They met by chance because of random assignments. And though there's an almost instant attraction between the two of them, he's still mourning and she's still trying to prove herself.
Fast forward two years and that attraction is still there, has only deepened in the following years since that first meeting. And that attraction is swiftly turning into something much deeper and something that neither one of them has any control over.
Fast forward two years and he stares at her on the opposite side of a force shield. Watches as the woman he loves tells him to leave her behind, knowing that he can't. He just can't. Wanting to say so many things to her but none of them form into words. So he says nothing, though his eyes are reflecting all of his feelings back at her.
Fast forward two years and he looks at her leaning against his shoulder, a broken mess. Knowing that she might only have a few hours to live before her body completely shuts down after the experiments that Nerti did on her.
Fast forward two years and he looks at the small black box she hands him. Another man's ring. She waits for him to give her a reason to say no, any hint that he still cares for her. But he puts on a smile and gives her back the ring. He won't stand in the way of her happiness.
Fast forward two years and he slowly wakes up, the feel of her warm body just inches from him. His eyes open and with a hand he reaches out to tenderly brush away the hair from her face. She's beautiful, and he doesn't really know why she's right here beside him, but he's not complaining.
Fast forward two years, and in an alternate timeline, she sits alone in a cold empty apartment. This world, the past ten years are meaningless, they never happened here. The past ten years have been erased from history. She never grew to love him, he didn't know her. Her world is cold and solitary, just like her heart.
Fast forward twenty five years as the man she loves slowly slips away in her arms. He slips away on a cold Wednesday morning in January having lived a full life. She had thirty seven years with him, twenty five years together with him, and somehow...it's enough for her. She loves him, misses him, would gladly spend another fifty years or more with him...but in the end, it's enough.
