From the corner of the eye, she notices the sun setting through the window. It's a strange mix of pink and orange, hints of gold breaking through the clouds. If she squints, Suzume can find the exact shade of Mamura's hair in the sky.
"Here," he says, placing a bowl of popcorn on the table before settling onto the couch.
"I could have watched The Little Mermaid," she mutters in response, a frown on her face. Saturday is movie night, a break between class and the exams that are just around the corner. Yuyuka's busy and for the first time in a month it's just the two of them sitting on Mamura's couch.
"You don't know enough English." He reaches across the table for the control and starts the movie.
"You don't know that."
He gives her a pointed look. The same one he gives when he's teaching her English and she forgets everything she learned last week. She grumbles under her breath, grabbing her own small bowl of shrimp and sauce and placing it next to his popcorn. Scooching over, she bumps shoulders with him as she adjusts on the couch next to him.
Though he will never admit it, Mamura's a romance fan. She wanted to watch something with fish. As the opening rolls in, the jellyfish taking over the screen, she thinks Ponyo is a good compromise.
A little too good, and she wipes the drool off her mouth.
He gives her a dry look now, realizing she's fantasizing about food, and shakes his head. The shrimps on the table don't help but it's not too long before she's swept away to an ocean of fish-girls and magic and the merging of two worlds.
Suzume leans slightly against him, his arm hot against hers. He stiffens slightly, before relaxing once more. It's tempting to rest her head against his shoulder but she wants to stay awake for the movie.
On screen, she watches a giant tsunami create a water-world.
"That'd be nice."
Mamura snorts lightly. "The fish would eat you."
"Not if I catch them first." It's not the first time Mamura's doubted her fish-catching skills. She half wants a water-world now, just to show him how easily she'd adapt.
He shakes his head again and she head butts his shoulder in response. With a soft nudge, he bumps her back, and she has to be the bigger person and ignore it. There are fish on the screen again.
"She should have stayed a fish," she sighs as the credits roll on.
"Would you?" Mamura asks offhandedly as he turns off the T.V.
She looks at him now, at the curls in his hair and the slight hunch in his posture. His hand is warm in hers—when did that happen?—and she smiles broadly.
"Yes," she states matter-of-factly.
He turns to face her, an eyebrow arched in surprise. She's not quite sure why—she'd never give up a chance to for a sea buffet. "And leave everything?"
She shakes her head. "Not everything. I'd have you join me."
It's only when he turns redder than a lobster that she realizes the weight of her words. Her face flushes to match his and they spend the next ten minutes just sitting there, too embarrassed to do anything.
