The Letter

My Beloved Harry,

If you are reading this letter, it means that your father and I are dead. Know first that we love you dearly and will always be so proud of you, my angel son.

My son, there are circumstances surrounding your birth that you must know in which no one else can tell you. First of all, you are not James Potter's flesh and blood.

Harry dropped the letter on the bed, staring at the empty space above his propped hand in shock. He shook his head. Not James Potter's son? Then who the hell...?

He scooped up the letter again, reading feverishly.

Your father was a brave man. He was a powerful ally to the Order and a dear friend of mine. When James was discovered to be impotent, the result of the stigmatic pureblood, my friend offered to assist.

Harry winced and continued to read.

Harry, all I wanted was a child. I only wanted you and both my friend and James agreed... They were close enough in appearance that no one would ask any questions regarding your parentage. They were both tall and dark haired with pale skin, and though James tanned easier than my friend did, I am pale enough that it wouldn't be noticed.

Harry closed his eyes and counted to ten, slowly. Please, please, please!

You probably don't know him, Harry, but he is a good man. When you meet him, please understand that he has had a rather difficult childhood and didn't have many friends as a child. I was his only friend for a long time.

Oh god!

Harry, you father is a man named Severus Snape.

"Mum!"

Foot steps pounded on the floor and Harry's door was flung open and the ceiling lights flooded the room. A woman, tall, graceful and red haired stood in the doorway. It was just after midnight on Harry's seventeenth birthday and he was currently conducting a private tradition in the sanctity of his room.

A man appeared at Lily's elbow and looked over her shoulder. "Harry? What's going on?"

Harry sniffed. "Why didn't you tell me?" He tossed the letter on the floor and collapsed upon his bed with a sob.

"Oh dear." Lily sighed.

James scratched his cheek. "I take it you forgot to cancel the letter?"

Lily nodded wordlessly and James laughed. He approached Harry's bed and rested a hand on his son's shoulder. "It'll be alright kido."

Harry chocked on a wordless cry and mumbled, "I spent all last year staring at his bum! My father's bum!"

Lily sighed again. "I knew I should have told him earlier."

James blinked, stunned. "My son is in love with Snape."

"Oh, I'm sure it's just a school-boy crush, dear." Lily soothed.

Harry just raised his head, looked down at the letter and howled out his pain.

A/N: This is a silly little piece inspired by all those stories which depict "the letter" explaining that Harry's parents are not who he thinks they are. I turned the tables. Imagine, Lily writing a letter "just in case" and living. What if she forgets about the letter? There you have it! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed the silliness. ;)
