"It's past your bedtime, Shizuka." Haruka said softly without turning around. "You should be sleeping, shouldn't you?"

The little boy in the doorway froze, his eyes widening. He could never understand how his grandfather could tell when he was there without looking.

"I can't sleep."

Haruka turned his head. "Come here."

Shizuka tightened his grip on his teddybear's arm and walked to where his grandfather sat. The old man smiled warmly down at him and lifted the child easily into his lap.

"Did you have a bad dream?"

Shizuka pulled his teddybear into his arms and hugged it tightly before shaking his head. "No. It wasn't a dream. At least, I don't think so...." He looked up, a thoughtful look on his face.

"I see."

The two sat there in silence for a while. Both gazing out the window at the moon.

"Grandfather..."

"Yes?"

"Maybe it was a dream. Although it didn't feel at all like a dream. It seemed too real to be a dream..."

"What was it about?"

"I...." Shizuka trailed off, frowning. "Someone was crying. A boy. He was alone. I just knew that was why he was crying. And it made me feel very sad too. I could see him. But I couldn't reach him...."

He stopped talking and burried his face in his grandfather's shirt. He didn't want to cry, but he couldn't help it. With the dream had come the most intense feelings of sorrow and hopelessness. And the boy had seemed to be in such pain...

"Shhhh....It's okay...." Haruka whispered soothingly, rubbing the child's back gently.

The sobbing slowed at a steady pace until Shizuka's breath was even. Haruka almost thought his grandson had cried himself to sleep. But the boy spoke, his voice low.

"Grandfather, that boy.... I know it was a dream but.... I think he was real. I don't think he was just a dream. I think he's as real as I am."

He sounded so sure. Shizuka had always trusted his instincts. And Haruka had no doubt that his grandson honestly believed that the boy in his dreams was real. And who was to say he was wrong? Haruka believed it to be possible. Afterall, he himself had dreams of things that would come to be, so perhaps his grandson did too.

"And if he is real?" Haruka asked. "Then what will you do?"

Shizuka didn't hesitate. And his voice was steady when he spoke.

"I'll do my what I can, so he won't be alone anymore."

Shizuka sounded so serious. He looked so serious. Haruka hugged his grandson close.

Years passed. And Shizuka never had another dream like the one that night. But he didn't forget.

And he wasn't wrong.
