Darkness is another jailer, Zee thinks. There is eternity in the hole, and the bugs. They aren't real, but that doesn't stop them from coming and crawling over his skin – biting and chittering.
One sense is dead in the dark, but that is no mercy as the stench of the latrine drowns him. It's too bad the bugs aren't afraid of the smell.
His ears strain for the bugs' approach, but all he hears is Alex tap, tap, tapping in the next cell. It's all he has; but he won't make it much longer.
