Almost muted, I crept through the forest from the third, final and unlit fire to the second – knowing it had been lit. As I crept through the shadows, I had to remind myself she`s still alive, that her strong little heart is beating thunder. Or is she lay somewhere, still and as cool as the night air.
Then I heard it. The one noise I was praying would never embark my ear. My only working ear felt like it was bleeding as much as my other. Suddenly, I commenced into the fastest run, rapid like a cheetah, my heart a beating drum. Knowing this may have been a trap, I just couldn't help myself. Shortly after I thought to myself that there was a chance I was imagining the whole thing, however I'm exposed now. There's then another high pitched cry, this time my name. "Katniss! Katniss!" it was Rue, as soon as the sound had rang through my ear drum I replied in a colossal panic: "Rue!" (Thinking that maybe I could panic her attackers...)
When I broke into the clearing, she was on the ground, hopelessly entangled in a net. She just had time to say my name before the spear entered her body.
In the blink of an eye the boy was down too. My metal arrow had flown from my bow into the crisp skin on the back of his neck. He collapsed to his knees then used his last few seconds pulling the arrow out before he drowned in his own pool of blood.
Immediately I reloaded, "Are there more? Where are they?" I screeched, but she only had enough energy to say no loud enough for me to hear.
The following second, only a second; I freed her from the net. Sadly I couldn't free her from anything else. I saw instantly her wound was far too bad to heal. I crouched before her, staring helplessly at the embedded weapon. I couldn't comfort her, I just watched her, silently.
"Did you blow up the food?"-she's trying to find something positive out of this.
"Every last bit of it." I replied.
"You can win Katniss," She smiled "you have a golden heart but it's hard like a rock."
She asked me to sing, I had hardly done this since my father had passed. But at that point in our lives I did. After sobbing the song through my cracked lips everything became still and quiet. After a few moments a Mocking jay close by took up Rues four note tune, others joined. It's was a complete harmony.
Just a few steps towards the stream layed a bed of beautiful flowers with colours from subtle lilacs to vibrant teals. As soon as Rues cannon fires I went over to collect some. I got an armful, carefully picking the different colours and take them back to her. I scattered them around her and over her wound, she looked beautiful then. In a deep slumber.
"Happy Hunger Games, and my the odds be ever in your favour..."
