Doctor Cox was walking past the break room when he saw someone wildly gesticulating with their hands. He stopped abruptly and backtracked, sauntering into the room. He flicked a finger down the bridge of his nose at the sight in front of him, crossing his arms to his chest. "Newbie, I think you're a bit confused, because although this place may seem like a freak show, this is actually a hospital. And while you very well may be the token girly girl with an evident gender crisis, you are - and don't worry, because this surprises me, too - a girly girl with an evident gender crisis with a doctorate." He grunted, walking away before JD could utter a word. "Now get back to work!"
The older doctor watched at the corner of his eye as Carla breezed past him with a thin manila folder in hand, walking into the break room. Not a moment later, she reemerged into the hall with JD trailing behind her, the both of them making a beeline for a patient's room just down the corridor.
Doctor Cox followed after them with mild interest, coming to stand beside Carla as she stopped in front of the hospital room window. JD handed her a thick soft cover book before entering the room, a warm smile lighting his features.
He looked through the glass to find JD gesticulating with his hands just as he'd witnessed back in the break room, moving his right hand up and down the length of his own face from temple to chin, then drawing his hands away from him only to pull them back in a motion that seemed to depict reining something in. The young boy occupying the hospital bed grinned, touching his fingertips to his chin before moving them away from him slightly.
Carla smiled, glancing at Doctor Cox. "The kid was admitted early this morning, no identification on him. No one had known he was deaf until he'd woken up. JD went to the bookstore on his lunch break and bought a book on signing."
Doctor Cox masked any sign of admiration with a derisive snort. He paused, watching JD ruffle the kid's hair. "What's he saying?" he asked softly.
Carla opened the soft cover book, finding inside the title page two lines of JD's handwriting, and below it, several page numbers clustered between parentheses. She and Doctor Cox leaned forward to read his scrawl, chuckling as they did so.
