"You can have a thousand more birthdays. All you have to do is ask."
Caroline let her sadness and fear out as she stared at him, the only person who could help her, the one her friends were fighting. "I don't want to die," she said, tears coming out as sounds instead of drops of water. Klaus lifted his right arm and pulled his sleeve back as his left arm touched Caroline's dying body and he pulled her up to lean on him. He put his wrist in front of her lips. He leaned his chin against her head, "There you go, sweetheart. Have at it."
Caroline felt her face changing and her sharp teeth coming out to pierce his hard skin. She sunk them in his veins, and as she felt her eyes bloodshut red, he whispered, "Happy birthday, Caroline." She swallowed a mouthful of his blood before she felt the wound heal and the rotten flesh slowly disappear from her otherwise beautiful body. Klaus put her down softly, his hand still in her hair. He let her go and brought his fingers to her face, using his thumb to wipe away a drop of his blood beneath her lip.
"You need to rest. A hybrid bite is not something to walk off."
Caroline opened her eyes slowly and looked up to meet his caring expression. "Why did you heal me, Klaus? I'm nobody to you."
Klaus breathed heavily, moving his head a bit to his left as he still looked down at the blonde. "Because I made him do it."
She closed her eyes and let her head float on the pillow. "Why?"
"I'm sorry. I told Tyler to bite you, sweetheart," he told her as his hand moved slowly over her soft hair, "But you can't die… You're too young, Caroline. And you're good."
"You're good, too, Klaus," she mumbled as her face leaned into her pillow and her mind wandered slowly into dreams.
"Sweet Caroline. Once I was, perhaps… But now I am nothing but a lost cause."
She fell asleep, not bothering the man was still on the side of her bed watching over her. An hour passed, then two and Klaus observed the even breathing on the girl next to him. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a black box, tied with a white ribbon. He put it down close to Caroline's head, as he observed her sleeping, he took her hand in his and moved his lips closer. He gave her a light kiss and he put her hand down, "Good night, dear Caroline. Have a wonderful life."
