Kaoru stood outside of the doorway, tray of tea balanced within her hands. Aoshi had come by the dojo requesting to speak with Kenshin. She had volunteered to prepare tea while they discussed business. Tea was one of the few things Kaoru could make without disaster.
She observed them talking in soft tones to one another, unsure of the words that passed through their lips. They were so different and yet, so much the same it seemed.
Both had fought in the revolution at such young ages. Both had lost those dear to them. Kenshin lost his own wife to his sword while Aoshi's four best friends had died while working with him, protecting him.
She knew they both dealt with unending guilt. Kenshin chose to make amends by helping any in need, ignoring his own desires, his own dreams. His nightmares took up too much time.
Aoshi withdrew into himself after recovering from his brief bout of madness. He now spent his time meditating in solitude.
Kenshin wore a mask of silliness while Aoshi erected an impenetrable wall. As she watched them she could see the pain and determination reflected in each of their eyes. There was no need to pretend when they were amongst each other with hands soiled in blood that could never be cleansed.
Kaoru knew these men would die to protect those they loved. Unfortunately, neither would allow themselves to love with all his heart.
So she was doomed to be loved and not loved at the same time. She walked into the room, carrying the tea, wearing her own mask of false cheer. A pair of violet and icy blue eyes watched her silently, as they too seemed to know she was hiding her heart as well.
