Kiyotaka Ishimaru shifted, shoving his hands deeper into his pockets and taking a look around the pet shop. Mondo had disappeared as soon as they'd entered the shop, leaving Ishimaru by the door, feeling thoroughly out-of-place. Mondo had picked him up from work, and not only was there something incredibly inappropriate about speeding away on a motorcycle in a suit and tie, but Mondo kept up a steady stream of chatter about dogs and what kind he wanted and a lot of other things that Ishimaru had lost to the wind.
"Do you need some help, sir?" an employee asked him, and Ishimaru shook his head.
"I am just waiting for my partner to find a dog," Ishimaru said. He shifted again and felt the edge of a coin in his pocket, which was strange, as he emptied his coat pockets of loose change and garbage every night.
"Would you like to look at some other animals while you wait? We have some new kittens ready for adoption," the employee offered. Ishimaru frowned. They were getting a dog, that had already been decided, so he saw no point in looking at kittens. He was about to vocalize his thoughts when Mondo came barreling back over holding two puppies and a kitten.
"One pet," Ishimaru reminded him.
"No, no, see, the puppies are brothers, and we can't split up brothers, and then I was thinkin', right, that you don't really seem like a dog person, which is fucking ridiculous but they drool and you're all neat-freak, so I thought, if we got a little cat for you, and they get along, so-"
"One pet. One. I am doubtful that we have the ability and time to take care of one pet, let alone three!"
The kitten meowed and put one paw on each of the puppies' heads. Mondo held out the pile of fur toward Ishimaru and Ishimaru's frown deepened.
"We agreed-"
"But that was before we got here! Look, we can ask Chihiro to look after them when we can't, or something-"
"I'm not going to impose on your friend-"
By this point, the two of them were nose-to-nose, the puppies barking and kitten mewling between them. Ishimaru was still about half a foot shorter than Mondo, but on his tip-toes they could look each other straight in the face without anyone looking down or up.
"Do you two need help?" the employee asked, and Mondo and Ishimaru answered in unison.
"No."
"I'm getting all three of them," Mondo said, turning, and Ishimaru grabbed one of the puppies and made to walk back to the puppy area. Mondo grabbed his collar and yanked him back with one hand while he told the harried-looking employee that, yes, they were getting all three no wait don't call the police.
Twenty minutes later, the two of them (plus the three animals) were three blocks from the pet store. Mondo killed his motorcycle and Ishimaru, clutching all three of the animals while they dug their claws and nails and teeth into him, glared.
"I cannot believe," Ishimaru said, untangling the kitten from his chest and setting it down on Mondo's shoulder, where it purred and stuck its claws straight in Mondo's neck. "That you yanked me out of that pet store and we ran away from the police because of three animals, when we decided we were only going to get one."
"Well, now they're all ours, so," Mondo said, after he was done swearing and untangling his flesh from the kitten's claws. Ishimaru worked at prying his sleeve away from one of the puppy's teeth.
"At least I had the chance to pay them before you pulled me onto your motorcycle! I shudder to think what would have happened otherwise!"
So, this was requested by a user on Tumblr, who wanted older Ishimaru and Mondo adopting a pet together. So we got this!
