Selfish
Summary: SPOILERS for the first Drakengard ending! Caim contemplates his unfair ending and decides to do something about it.
Author's Note: I noticed that the Evanescence song, "Even in Death", really matches Caim and Angelus' predicament.
Caim lowered his head against a gust of cold wind. Snow whirled in the air, temporarily turning everything white, before settling down again. The little girl at his side whimpered, but he payed her no mind.
It had been several months. Several months that he had been alone. Several months that he watched the others rebuild from the war...
The mute soldier clenched his jaw as the girl tripped over a hidden branch. Yanking her to her feet, he continued walking, mindless of her discomfort.
It was nightfall when Caim finally stopped. The little girl fell asleep instantly, exhausted from the journey. He glared at her still form with a fierce anger. Because of this brat, this wretched child, the only thing important in his life was gone.
Angelus, the crimson dragon... Despite their hatred toward one another, they managed to become close friends... No, they were more than that. They shared some form of love Caim had never experienced before. It had warmed his empty soul, made him feel comforted. Then Angelus went away. She gave herself up to be the Seal. She had given herself up for him. Even though he'd rather let the world collapse...
Caim shook himself from his morose thoughts and stared up at the cloudy night sky. It would snow again tomorrow. Settling down under a tree, he slowly shut his eyes.
Then he jerked upright with a soundless yelp. The child sat up, surprised by his sudden motion. There was a horrible burning sensation in his mind. The mute curled his lips up into a snarl and stared up at the sky.
Angelus was hurting. And he knew who was doing it to her.
Suddenly, there was an entirely new pain. He grabbed his bleeding eye and hissed at the escaping brat. However, Angelus' pain meant more to him than the wretch. He finally managed to slow the bleeding down.
Verdelet was going to pay.
Caim stared emotionlessly down at the hierarch's body. Verdelet had tried to lie his way out of trouble, but the mute was not easily fooled. Despite the coward's death, Angelus was still hurting. Caim walked away from the body and sat down, staring up at the sky.
He knew he was selfish. He always had been. He didn't think himself a fool, despite the crimson dragon's constant nagging. Then, a small smile came to his face.
This world owed them. They had saved it. Everybody else had gotten their happy endings, yet Caim and Angelus still suffered. The mute decided to change that.
He would be a selfish fool. He would take Angelus back. To hell with the world.
