Castiel knew he shouldn't have left Dean alone. But it was for the best, he didn't want something bad to happen to Dean. Castiel cared too much about, some could even call it love. So that's why he left Dean standing there alone in the darkness. He knew Dean could handle himself; after all Dean was one of few things that the monsters feared, and an angel in Purgatory, how lucky for everyone that wanted him dead. Castiel barely had enough power to fly away, much less to cloak his presences. Castiel also knew that Dean would never leave him behind, something that the angel could never grasp. Who would ever care for an angel who would most likely never be forgiven?
As soon as Dean realized that he was alone he didn't even think. Relying solely on instincts that came with years of hunting, he stayed alive. If he stopped for too long he could be killed, or worse he would think about Cas and all the jumbled feelings that came with those thoughts. So he never stopped hunting, Dean didn't even know how long he had been going at it, Purgatory being in never ending twilight. But as the minutes, or hours, passed by Dean's only thoughts turned to the angel.
He had no clue where he was, or even if he was still alive. Dean once made promise to never leave behind and to always protect family or anyone he care about. And as far as anyone else was concerned Cas was a close friend or even a brother, but Dean knew he had much stronger feelings for the angel. Hunting to stay alive wasn't an option, now he was hunting to save Cas.
"Dean!"
He could hear Cas yelling for him, but he couldn't move.
"Dean! Pleas-"
The reunion with his brother had been short but Dean was never really a gushy type of person. He preferred short, sweet -or as sweet as you can get when checking to see if either of you is not human -and to the point. And that's how they greeted each. Dean knew eventually Sam would start asking questions about what happened. Unfortunately that time came too quickly.
"What about Cas, was he there?"
"Yeah, Cas didn't make it."
"What exactly does that mean?"
"something happened to him down there. Things got pretty hairy at the end-" Dean paused for a moment as gave a small shake of the head. "and he just let go."
"So Cas is dead. You saw him die." It was more of a statement than a question.
"I saw enough."
"So you're not sure?"
"I said I saw enough, Sam."
"Ok." It looked like Sam wanted to say more but he stopped himself. "Look, Dean I'm sorry."
"Yeah, me too."
Dean changed the subject before his mouth betrayed him by saying too much. He was afraid he had already given away too much already. Dean had a deal that he couldn't break. For his and Cas' sake he hoped he wasn't going to break it.
