The cold autumnn wind blew past the lone figure who currently stood in front of the memorial statue that doubled as the gravemarker for her deceased eldest team mate, her head bowed slightly in her grief. Buttercup had been making a daily visit to the memorial statue in the week since her eldest team mate had made the ultimate sacrifice for her sake. She closed her eyes at the memory of her eldest team mate's death.
Flashback- a week earlier
Explosions sounded as things were destroyed in the currently ongoing fight between the six thirteen year olds. The eldest of the female trio looked away from her male version, who she was currently locked in battle with and the moment she glanced away, failed to notice the beam of energy he fired towards her.
The energy beam collided with her mid section and she was flung backwards a few yards, only to land heavily on her back. She took a few minutes to recover from the energy beam before she charged towards where her male version stood.
Midway towards his current position, she noticed that her middle team mate's male version had just released a bolt of lighting, which was heading directly towards her middle team mate. Without thinking, the eldest of the female trio altered direction and stood between Buttercup and the bolt of lighting. There was a bright flash of light, which made her throw up an arm to shield her eyes. Seconds later, the bright flash of light faded and she looked down at the motionless form of her eldest team mate, who lay on her back with a blackened area on her chest, where she had taken the brunt of the lighting bolt's energy. In that moment, the brunette knew her eldest team mate was gone forever.
End flashback
The sound of her name being uttered by her only remaining team mate made Buttercup turn around and face the blonde.
"Figured I'd find you here, sis," she said.
"Yeah."
Silence fell between the two for several long seconds.
"I miss her," Buttercup said softly.
"I know. I miss her too."
"I wish I knew why she chose to put herself between me and that bolt of lighting."
"She did it because she loved you."
"What are we gonna do without her?"
"I don't know."
"She was the one who kept us from really going at each other. Now that she's gone, I don't kow how we can keep doing what we were born to do. It's always been the three of us working as a seamless team."
"What are you saying?"
"This life just isn't meant for me anymore. It's down to just you and me now. I'll never get used to the fact that we're a duo rather then a trio."
"So, you're giving up? That's never been part of who you are."
"Don't you get it? Our sibling's death ruined me. I'm haunted by the fact that she willingly took the brunt of the lighting strike that was intended for me. I should be the one who's six feet under, not our sibling!"
