The new war

Disclaimer: don't know space battleship Yamato, nor Battlestar Galactica.

Summary: The Yamato is on the eve of retirement, along with her captain, Kodai. When an unknown enemy launches a devastating attack, leaving much of humanity in ruins, the survivors fight back in a brutal war.

Chapter 1 The fall

The Colony

Unknown space

The Cylons spent years observing earth, the fabled 13 tribe. After they destroyed the 12 colonies, they set their sights on earth.

"I see that the 13 tribe is alive and well. Too bad it won't last long for them." Cavil said.

"Let gods will be done. He has decreed it." Six replied.

"Oh my god. Was it gods will that we were slaves to the 12 colonies? Was it gods will that we were to wander for 40 years? If it wasn't for me, we'd still be behind the armistice line. I fucking destroyed the 12, and I'll destroy the 13. Get the fleet ready." Cavil ordered.

The Yamato sailed thru space, its last captain, Susumu Kodai, walking thru a hallway, reading a speech.

"The past wars are long gone, but we must not forget-" Kodai muttered.

"Morning sir." An officer said, saluting Kodai.

"Morning Karl. What's the news?" Kodai asked.

"Nothing much. Though this comm from fleet control, they said that they found something on the edge of our solar system. They want an FTL ship to head out there." Karl said.

"I'd say we're real busy. With the decommissioning and all." Kodai said to his tactical officer, smiling a bit.

"Yes sir." Karl said, walking away.

Kodai sat in the Captains seat, pondering the past 40 of military service. He remembered everything. From the Gamilian wars, to the comet empire, to everything else. It was a miracle that the Yamato survived it all. That humanity survived it all.

"I'll miss you, Yamato." He whispered to the ship, even though it couldn't respond.

"Captain. Captain." Mickey said, shaking Kodai.

"What?" Kodai said to his XO.

"Deck chief wants you to visit the hanger bay."

As the two headed to the hanger bay, a space liner headed towards the Yamato. The secretary of education, Nannette Nelson, was to take part of the decommissioning ceremony, as the ship was to be turned into a museum, after being handed over to the ministry of education.

Nannette looked over her notes, and some documents concerning the old battleship.

"Wonder what it'd be like to their? During the wars?" she mused.

Kodai and Mickey head to the hanger deck, seeing an F-104 star-fighter.

"Where'd you find this?" Kodai asked, not seeing the old fighter for over 30 years.

"Rusting out in a salvage yard in Pluto. She's fueled, armed, and ready to roll. We also have a squadron of the fighter on display." The chief engineer said, motioning towards the fleet.

"This is amazing. Thanks for everything." Kodai said.

As Kodai walks towards the bridge, the alarms sound off.

"Action stations! Action stations!" was heard thru the PA system.

Kodai ran to the bridge, asking for a sitrep.

"What the hell's going on?" Kodai asked.

"We got a contact on our right, astern of us. It just came out of warp. And it's closing fast." Mickey said.

"IFF?" Kodai asked.

"Nothing. Either they're an enemy, IFF is down, or it's space pirates attempting an attack."

"Shit. Launch fighters, and turn the ship aside. Once you get a lock, fire with everything we got." Kodai ordered.

"Sir, we don't have any modern fighters. And most of our munitions have been destroyed. We're down to using our shock cannons, and pulse-laser defense turrets. Oh, and the wave motion gun is offline." Karl said.

"Damn!" Kodai growled, slamming a consol.

On the space liner, Nannette was having a headache.

"I hate warp jumps." She muttered.

Nannette headed to the cockpit to see what the problem was with the warp jump, only to walk right into a bad situation.

"They're not responding." One of the pilots said.

"Who isn't?" Nannette asked.

"The Yamato."

A transmission broke thru the haze.

"Attention unknown vessel. Stop your ship right now, or we'll destroy you." Kodai threatened.

"Tell them the secretary of education is arriving for the decommissioning ceremony." Nannette said.

The news didn't go over well. A blast from one of the shock cannons persuaded them to stop.

"If what you're saying is true, send your recognition codes. Both your ship, and the secretary."

A few tense minutes passed, as the codes were sent.

"Okay. They check out. Welcome aboard." Kodai sarcastically said.

Talk about a rough start. It was only made worse when Kodai and Nannette were discussing about the Yamato.

"Having a networked computer will help make things much faster, it'll make teaching more efficient." Nannette said.

"Here's something you need to know. We have computers on the ship, but the time and money it'll take the upgrade it all to modern standards would be too much. Better off scrapping the ship, and building a new one from scratch. It's not compatible with our systems. I'm not having it on my ship." Kodai affirmed.

"You know, if your systems were more advanced, with the networked system, maybe you wouldn't have fired on us." Nannette pointed.

"You're lucky you're still here. If your pilot didn't tell us about your arrival, I'd have shot you down." Kodai said.

The ceremony went as planned. Meanwhile, the Cylons were making final preparations for their attack.

"Lets see. We got all the intel on their fleet, and their using the networked computers, just like their brethren from the 12 colonies. Time to initiate a first strike. We know where their ships will be. Lets get this genocide started." Cavil said.

"By your command." Doral said.

As Nannette and her ship headed back to earth, they were tagged by one of the old F-104 fighters.

"Earth-bus 001, this is Allen. I'll be escorting you back to earth." Allen said.

"Copy that Allen. Enjoy the ride."

Space battleship Yamato

2 hours after ceremony

The phone rang two times, and Kodai picked it up.

"Go ahead." He muttered.

"Sorry to disturb you, but we got a message from HQ. Sent in the clear." Karl said.

"What does it say?" Kodai asked.

"Attention, all Terron units. Enemy attack, of unknown origin is underway. This is no drill." Karl said.

"I'll be right there." Kodai said, before hanging up the phone. We're all dead.

"Shipping accident?" Mickey joked, walking into the bridge.

Kodai hands Mickey a piece of paper.

"This is a joke. The fleet's playing a joke on you. It's a retirement prank." Mickey said.

"It's not." Kodai said, before grabbing a phone off a console.

"This is your captain. Moments ago, this ship received word, that an unknown enemy is launching an attack against us, right now. We do not know the size, strength, let alone who or what this enemy is. But all indications point, towards a massive assault against human defenses. Admiral Burgin, has taken command of the battlecruiser Berlin, following the complete destruction of the Neptune fleet HQ in the first waves of the attack. How, why, doesn't matter now. What does matter, is that of this moment, we're at war. Stand to your duties, trust your fellow shipmates, and we'll get thru this. Further updates as we receive them."

"Karl, plot how many ships are in the solar system. Friendly and otherwise. Colonel, start looking for munition depots. We need something to shoot." Kodai ordered.

Back with the secretary of education, they were getting word of the attacks.

"I just heard that one of our colonies has been nuked. Is it true?" Nannette asked.

"Neptune, and three other colonies." The pilot said.

"I'll tell them." Nannette said.

The news did not go well.

"Saturn, Pluto, and Neptune. Those are the only ones so far." Nannette said.

"What about mars?" someone asked.

"My kids are on Titan. Any word?" another person asked.

"Calm down. I'm trying to contact the government. Just prepare for an extended stay aboard ship." She said.

"Allen, what's the news?" the pilot asked.

"Lots of confusing chatter. Can't make heads or tails of it." Allen said.

"I'm glad you're out there." The pilot muttered.

He didn't get a response, because a missile was screaming right towards them. Allen destroys it with a blast of gunfire, but the EMP from the blast shortens out his fighter.

"Krypter, krypter, krypter. This is Allen declaring an emergency. Need assistance."

"What's the report Dee?" Karl asked.

"Lots of equipment malfunctions. This one says that a fleet of 5 destroyers, plus fighter escorts lost power just before they engaged the enemy. Like someone flipped a switch." Dee explained.

Kodai had to tell the crew the unfortunate news of the attacks.

"Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn have been attacked with nuclear weapons. 14 minutes, ago, a thermonuclear device in the 60 megaton range, was detonated on New Britain, the capital of Jupitar. Casualties will be high. Best we can do, is to take the ship into the fight."

After some work, they got the squadron of 40 F-104s ready for action. And in time, because Cylon raiders were heading towards them.

"Multiple contacts, high probability enemy fighters." Mickey noted.

"All batteries, fire." Kodai ordered.

Plasma erupts from Yamato's shock cannons, coupled with the laser fire from her point-defense guns. About 24 F-104 fighters screamed towards the Cylon fighters. The 104 was much faster, and had better weapons, with two 20mm nose cannons, and additional wing-mounted .50 machineguns. They Cylon strike force was torn to pieces, but during the fighting, one of the raiders fired three nukes, just before getting destroyed, along with two of the nuclear missiles.

"Brace for contact." Kodai muttered, as the third nuclear missile came closer and closer.

The missile made contact and heavily rocked the battleship. Everyone fell to the floor and Kodai blacked out.

Kodai woke up and observed the bridge. Most of the electronics were starting up again after being hit from the EMP.

"Radiation levels within norm. Can't believe the hull armor stopped it." Kodai said.

"These battleships are tough as nails." Mickey said, holding his forehead; bleeding.

Nannette is in the cockpit with the pilots, observing a fleet of civilian ships they found. Around 20. The radio crackles, and an automated broadcast is heard.

This is a United Nations government broadcast. All ministers and officials go to case orange. Repeat, go to case orange.

"Damn. It's an automated distress signal. Sent out if the president, vice president, and most, if not all, the congress members are killed or incapacitated." Nannette explained.

"Fuck me." Allen muttered.

"Send my code. A-5-O-369."

Allen talked with Nannette about the situation.

"I don't think they would have reached earth, whoever's attacking us. How far down are you?" Allen asked.

"20 in succession." Nannette said.

A paper was handed to Nannette, showing that she was the only high-ranking government official still alive.

"My god." Nannette said.

Earth

UN building

30 minutes before case orange distress call.

The president, and the higher up of the government and military were in a meeting, discussing the war.

"Mr President, we have no idea who's attacking us. We've been getting reports of entire fleets shutting down, just before they engage in combat." The military advisor reported.

"Any idea on how to stop it?" the president asked.

"We have an idea. Our ships have recently been equipped with the advanced navigational software program. If we delete it, it should prevent our remaining ships from shutting down." The advisor said.

"Do it." The president ordered.

Just then, Leoben walked into the room, holding a briefcase, and wearing an admiral's uniform.

"Ah, Admiral. I hope you have a plan for this mess. Our fleets are getting wiped out." The president said.

Leoben said nothing, but opened his briefcase. He pulled out a remote, and pressed the button. A large explosion occurred, killing everyone in the room.

With all the higher ups killed, the fleet was in disarray. The line was drawn between Mars and Jupitar, though at a high cost. Most of the modern ships were destroyed, thanks to the navigational program. Even some of the older ships were destroyed.

Mickey went to Kodai, giving him news.

"Meta anchorage has all the ammo we need to fight a full-scale war. Two problems. 5 days away at best speed, and the enemy fleet is between us and there." Mickey said.

"Karl, find the telemetry of the anchorage." Kodai said.

"You don't want to do this. It's been over 20 years since she's warped." Mickey warned.

"No choice. We're warping to Meta." Kodai said.

Dee handed Kodai a piece of paper. Kodai read it and put his head in his hands.

"Admiral Burgin is dead! Battlecruiser Berlin is destroyed. Along with most of the fleet." Kodai announced.

Just then, another piece of paper was handed to Kodai.

"And we received word that the few ships left are holding the line at Mars. Enemy can't get pass them for now. No commanding officer present. Everyone's running around like a headless chicken."

"What's the plan?" Mickey asked.

"Send a message. 'To all Terron units beyond Mars, am taking command of fleet. Regroup at the Meta anchorage for counter attack. Respond on same channel. Commander Kodai, battleship Yamato'." Kodai said.

Nannette Nelson was sworn in as president of Earth. In respect, her ship was quickly renamed Terron one. They were approaching the fleet of civilian ships. Since the start of the attack, all ship traffic was stopped, except military ships.

Allen grabbed a piece of paper, noting Kodai's orders.

"Kodai's taking command of the fleet. Or part of it." Allen said.

"Tell him we're engaged in rescue ops. Ask him how long it will take to get here, and how many hospital beds he has available." Nannette said.

"He's not going to respond to that well." Allen mused.

"It's from the president."

"Is this a joke?" Kodai asked, reading Allen's response. He grabbed his head phone, and talked to Allen.

"What's going on?"

"We're engaged in rescue ops. Order comes from the president." Allen said.

"We're in the middle of a war, and you're taking orders, from a school teacher?" Kodai asked.

The comms were briefly cut off, and Karl announced terrible news.

"We got fighters inbound on their position." Karl said.

Kodai put the headphones back on, and yelled for Allen.

"Allen, you got fighters inbound on your position! Warp to Meta immediately. Allen, Allen! Get out of their!" Kodai yelled, though in vain.

The radar showed a nuclear explosion, destroying all the ships in the convoy.

Kodai briefly mourned the loss of the fleet, but recomposes himself.

"Resume warp prep to Meta."

Like, don't like, read and review.
