Not Alone
Smellerbee sat by the lake with her knees to her chest as the rain pounded against her head. It was the day, and she knew it. Five years ago on that day, the fire nation destroyed her village, along with her life. Smellerbee remembered everything that happened. It was as if the event was etched into her brain, causing her to never forget, no matter how hard she tried. She closed her eyes, picturing everything.
The red and orange flames stretched to the skies that were covered in black ash and smoke. The screams of innocent women and children rang through her head, sending goose bumps throughout her body.
Then there was her family: her father, who made her the strong girl she was, and her mother, who was the only person that could make her laugh. But what killed Smellerbee the most was her baby brother. He wasn't even a year old when the fire nation invaded their village. Why couldn't it have been me? That question always whispered through her mind. The thought of her family brought tears to her eyes, and soon they were streaming down her cheeks, but she did nothing to wipe them away. She felt as if someone stabbed her, leaving her there to suffer and feel the pain. She felt alone.
Smellerbee felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked at the face it belonged to and saw Longshot's eyes look into hers. She saw something in them. Grief. Then, she hugged him, tears running down her face one after another. She could feel Longshot put a hand on her head, and hug her back. Soon the pouring rain changed into a drizzle and Smellerbee unlatched herself from him. He caressed her face and wiped away her tears with him thumbs.
"As long as I'm alive, you'll never be alone." It wasn't often that Longshot spoke and the fact that he spoke to Smellerbee, it gave her a spark of happiness.
That's when Smellerbee realized she wasn't completely alone.
