Chapter One – Victim of Circumstance

Not everyone chooses to be good or bad, it is more of a circumstance of opportunity. Many great people in the world never intended to become famous or infamous. Buddha was born from a rich family but he had a thirst for knowledge so great that it changed the world forever. Bruce Wayne didn't intend to become Batman prior to that fateful night when a frightened child saw the center of his universe taken in a moment of greed and Selina Kyle didn't grow up intending to become a notorious cat burglar.

If circumstance were to be classified as a plague then she was a woman plagued by circumstance.

Growing up in a an orphanage after her parents, who were circus acrobats, died in a freak accident she thought all of her troubles were over when she married at a young age to a wealthy businessman and she could finally live the good life, but soon after the marriage she knew her troubles were just beginning. For months Selina would endure the abuse because she felt trapped by him and his money, she was just one of his possessions now and he made sure she was watched 24/7. A monster he may be but he wasn't completely heartless and after each beating he would try to make it up to her by giving her expensive jewelry, furs, cars, anything to make him feel better for what he did to her, but all were hollow tokens as she knew they weren't meant for her.

6 months would pass until she reached her breaking point. Selina had enough of his abuse and decided to leave him. When she told him he became angry and began to hit her but she didn't cry after each blow, she laughed. When he knew he wasn't getting the reaction he wanted he threw her out in the same clothes he found her in, no furs, no jewelry, no cars…nothing. Selina was angry at him for all those months of torment and wanted what was rightfully hers so she made plans to use her circus skills and come back for them. After all, unknown to him, she learned all the passwords and key codes in the house.

Two nights would pass and she would return to her former prison dressed in all black and silent as cat she went about retrieving her possessions. Utilizing skills of an expert acrobat to enter the home through an upstairs window and moved unseen, unheard, and unstoppable. Selina's heart raced as she entered his den and opened the safe in his office and took all that was hers and more that was his. The experience gave her a rush that made her feel more alive than ever before. The making her way to the garage she loaded all the items into her favorite red convertible, then taking a fuel can she set a rag ablaze in it and as she drove out the main gates the explosions in the garage was her goodbye note, a small token of her love.

The experience stirred her soul in a way she couldn't ignore. Over the coming weeks reports flooded Gotham police ranging from jewelry being stolen from high rise penthouses to secret company files being sold to the competition. Blurred security camera images of a woman clad in tight black leather filled the television screens on all the local Gotham news channels with rumors the woman carried a whip, and moved with cat like agility. Word of Selina's skill spread in the criminal underground and soon paid work came her way, she didn't mind most the jobs as long as the money was as good as the rush she felt.

With all of Selina's confidence the old adage came to reality as she became too confident in her skills. After several years of securing her reputation a job came to her where the client wanted an enhancement drug being developed at Wayne-tech Labs. Knowing this would be the thrill of a lifetime she accepted the job, not knowing how this would change her life forever. She spent weeks scoping the layout of the building for its weaknesses, located camera locations and hidden stairwells that would lead her to the target when finally she was ready to make her move.

Waiting in the ceiling of the woman's restrooms until everyone had gone home and everything was silent. Creeping like a shadow into the lab she found and secured the prize, but before she could leave the lab she was met by the one person she had hoped to avoid…Batman.

At first she tried to charm her way out of the situation, use her womanly ways to talk her way out, but after negotiations failed with him she used her skills to fight her way out and escape by diving into the laundry chute. Thinking she outsmarted the giant man-bat Selina didn't think he would follow her down the tiny chute, but the fabric of his cape echoed in the tunnel behind her. Attempting to slow the speed of her fall from the 40th floor she used her whip to fling herself into the second floor lobby slamming into a wall. In the rush to escape she felt a burning sensation of a needle in her right hip that felt like acid was being forced into her body. It took all her strength to make it home and stricken with a high fever Selina collapsed on her floor. After a night of restless sleep the woman who was Selina Kyle was transformed by the formula she stole and awoke the next day as Catwoman.

Not many in the crime fighting world were familiar with the on and off again love affair between the bat and the cat, it was a surprise to me when I found out. My name is Helena Kyle and I am the one person whose own existence was a direct result of their 'on' again relationship. I never knew anything about my father prior to recently other than he was rich, a good man, and someone who liked to work nights. As I was growing up my mother managed to keep her whole super villain alter ego hidden from me and my little brother, Jason up until recently. Speaking of which, I should probably explain how Jae, as I call him, came about. Actually I didn't know much about that either, all I knew is that one day when I was about four years old my mother came home and told me I was going to have a baby brother or sister.. I'm sure you're wondering who his father is and I have to admit we didn't know for the longest time. Mom really didn't talk about either one of our fathers very much, which turned out to be a good and bad thing.

All my life I used to imagine what a normal family was like, but as I was about to find out my family was has been anything but normal. Since I turned 16 last month I have found living at home with my mother and brother in the city of Maxville to become more and more confining. For those who don't know my hometown is the home of the Commander and Jetstream, a pair of super heroes that have been protecting the city for the last 20 years. In this town those two seem to overshadow Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, but in reality they really are just local heroes. Every day my life consisted of going high school and watching my younger brother while my mom was away on numerous "business trips." Maybe I should have been more observant, but I honestly believed she worked for a large corporation that required her to travel, yet she never came home with a tan. I didn't realize her boss was actually a major crime organization that included Barron Battle, a man who murdered hundreds of innocent people by burning their entire village to the ground. It was on one of her trips when my life was turned upside down, she was captured by the Commander and Jetstream with a large amount of company files and a satchel full of money.

Do you know how embarrassing it is when about 100 cops swarm your house, break down the door, and handcuff you and your little brother? We didn't even get a chance to ask any questions before they shoved us both into a police van and sped off to the station. Then when you are scared out of your wits you find out that our mother was none other than the elusive thief Catwoman? But wait the fun doesn't end there, next thing we know the two of us were taken to the Hall of Justice, home of the freaking Justice League! I don't know what they think a couple of 16 year and 11 year old kids would know about something we didn't know until tonight, but here we were getting the 12th degree! I mean come on can you say overkill?

Well here is where we put the proverbial icing on the cake, not only is my mother going to go to prison for a very long time now me and Jae are going to be split up and put into foster care. It broke my heart as Jae sat on my lap crying, hell I almost broke down myself and then I noticed the great Batman was staring at us. Looking into his blue eyes I didn't sense any hate or contempt, but a sense of compassion, weird for Batman right? So here I am contemplating the fate of me and Jae when Batman walks over and stands in front of me then kneels down stares silently for a few moments, his cape flowed over his shoulders and the smell of leather was unmistakable, but what he said shook me to the core. He said that 16 years ago during a run in with my mother things got "Out of hand" as he put it, so when I was arrested he had tested my DNA in the Justice League's super computer. It appears that he is my father! Can you freaking believe it? The most infamous crime fighter in history is MY father!

As Jae and I sat stunned, a woman dressed in all white entered the room behind my newly found father and looked with curiosity at Jae and me. She said her name was La Paz or something like that and she apparently was the former wife of that Barron Battle guy I mentioned earlier and while she was visiting him in jail she saw my mom, Catwoman being lead in to her cell. It seems the topic of her came up and the Barron had somehow "admitted" to her that he'd had an affair with Catwoman some years back and that he may be Jae's father. Again Batman did a DNA test to prove it true. So, the good news is we are going to a foster home, but the bad news is since Jae's dad was Barron Battle he was told he was going to live with this…La Paz woman. It broke my heart to let him go, but my new dad said that Jae can visit me anytime he wanted to. I asked him how will he know where to go if I don't know where I am going to live, a cave?

It was when he took off his cowl did I have the answer to all my questions, who stood before me wasn't only Batman but the millionaire tycoon Bruce Wayne! Pretty mind-blowing right?

Okay, so soon Jae and I were released to go to our new homes and as we left the dark room we could see our stuff was already packed into suitcases in the hallway. I had a lump in my throat when Jae left with his step mom but I reassured him we would see each other soon. Turning away I was led to a parked car with this old, butler looking guy in there, come to find out he's a really nice guy name Alfred. It seems he has been helping my dad with all this Batman stuff since it started. The drive to my new home took a long time since the Justice League headquarters is three hours from Gotham city, but when I saw Wayne Manor come into view down the long driveway I was speechless! I had never seen nor thought I would live in…in a house like this! As I was settling in my new room Alfred brought me my new ID card, it seems dear old dad changed my name to Helena Wayne to avoid any unwanted attention with the last name of Kyle. Like Wayne isn't an attention grabber in itself! My thoughts keep drifting back to Jae, I feel bad for him because I won't be there to make him feel better, and why would they separate us when all he has known is me? I guess he has an older brother over there, but he doesn't know him like I know him. What do I get in trade for Jae? A 15 year old ill-tempered jerk Damian Wayne, who apparently was from a previous marriage to a former assassin, and starry-eyed 14 year old Athena Wayne, whose mother is the one and only Princess Diana also known as Wonder Woman! I tell you what, for a private man my dad sure gets around with the ladies!

So, speaking of family let me tell you something about my new 'family' so you can get a small idea of the fun I have to endure. First let's talk about Damian, he spent the first five years of his life with his mother, Talia al Ghul, and was trained by the League of Assassins. So the only super power he has is super intelligence, unarmed combat training, a healing ability he got from his mother and as I am finding out, a big mouth. So with all that combat experience it's no wonder Bruce chose him as the newest Robin.

Now, Athena I can tolerate in short spurts. She looks a lot like her mother, but she is really very shy at first. When we first met I thought she was going to blow a gasket when she found out I was living there, she picked me up and flew me around the house she was that excited, dang near crushed me with her 'hug'. She has calmed down since then but there are some mornings I don't need that much cheerfulness.

So since Bruce is a 'superhero' and all I get the luxury of going to an exclusive school, not for everyday people, but for the kids of the superheroes called Sky High. Are you kidding me, couldn't they come up with a better name like Hero Academy or something? It's a floating school in the sky where in addition to the usual studies you learn hero related things. I thought I heard it all but a flying school is beyond anything I could imagine!

So not only do I lose my mom, my brother, and my home, I had to move in with my rich dad, my half-brother and half-sister. So since they are both freshmen this year they get to go to school with me too...yay... I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the situation, Damien didn't have the 'luxury' of going to any hero school prior to Sky High since he was home schooled at Wayne Manor, I think he said Alfred taught him all he needed to know. Really, like what, how to make beds? What's his hero name going to be, the Bed sheet Folder?

Ugh…I feel like the walls are closing in on me, I need to scope out some areas to free run when I get the chance. I really liked doing that when mom was home and I miss it, It surprised me how naturally this stuff comes to me. The thrills of running from roof-tops to fire escapes gave me a feeling I can't explain in any other terms but euphoric. Well, actually with all that has happened I guess I can explain it now, but was it my mom or new dad to credit for my daredevil needs?

Okay well I'm guessing you're wondering what possible powers the daughter of a genetically modified Catwoman and a super intelligent Batman could have? After all I have been going on about what and who my family is and since I'm going to this super school it must mean I have some sort of power right? Well, maybe it's the reason why I'm able to do so much stuff like free running, walk along a thin ledge with extreme ease, or fight like a street brawler? I'm not sure what was in that shot my mother was injected with but maybe it had something to with cats or something? It would explain why I like cats so much, it's like I can understand them in ways others can't. I suppose I could have gotten my super intelligence from Bruce, but I have a feeling he is way smarter than me right now.

So here I am at the end of all of this sitting on my bed in Wayne Manor. I have not been allowed to see my mother at the Maxville Maximum Security Prison or even talk to my brother Jae since this all began. I start school tomorrow and I've quickly discovered that Damian's sour personality comes from Bruce and not his mother because he already has this 'Don't talk to me at school' rule going on. Fine by me, the little twerp can wander the halls all by himself with that attitude. I've been constantly visited by Athena and her best friend Carrie Kent, yes, she's best friends with Clark and Lois Kent's daughter and yes she has her father's super strength, speed, flight, super hearing and x-ray vision. She's just not as completely indestructible as him but nobody knows for sure. Both of the girls start school when I do and since I'm older they had all sort of questions about what school is like, how cute the boys are, etc. I filled their heads with all sorts of great things. It will be funny to see how they react when it isn't true!

To be honest I really hate what's happening and I fear it's only going to get worse now that I am mixing with a school full of super powered, hormone driven teenagers. I was told that Bruce has a private jet that's going to transport us there since the bus is too humiliating. I guess being the daughter of a billionaire does have some perks, but being the daughter of a super villain thief is probably going to proceed me. Well, I guess it's a good thing I'm only writing this in my journal and no one will ever be able to read it with the quad security I have on this thing. I mean when one has super intelligence and lives in a family of super geniuses one must take as many precautions as possible to hide one's personal thoughts. God, life was so much easier when I could keep my thoughts in a spiral notebook, back when my life made sense and I wasn't trapped in this nightmare. Much like mother, I am a victim of circumstance.

This is The Hubby, I went through and read this again and made some minor adjustments, so I hope it reads easier now. The idea for this series was my wife's originally, but I wanted to take a shot at improving it. As always reviews are welcome!
