The Lobby

Smart and 99 walked into a hotel. Smart wore a black tuxedo, and 99 wore a wedding dress. They walked to the front desk.

"May I help you?," asked the clerk.

"Yes," said Smart. "I believe you have a reservation—Mr and Mrs Maxwell Smart."

"We just got married!," said 99.

"Congratulations! Ah, yes. Your room is ready. We're giving you the bridal suite."

"You wouldn't have a room with double beds in it, would you?"

"Max!" She flashed an embarrassed smile. "This is his first time away from home."

"I understand!," said the clerk. He gave them a couple keys. "You have room 2010. It's on the top floor."

"Thank you," said 99.

In the Room

A bellboy led them to their room. Max gave him $1, and he left.

99 kicked her shoes off and took her wedding gown off.

"I'll just go in the men's room and change," said Max.

"Come here, Max." He walked over to her. "There's something I want to tell you."

"Yes, 99?"

"I know you're nervous being alone with me, and I know you're trying to be noble. But we are on a mission, and our cover is that we're married, so please act like it!"

"I guess you're right, 99. Sorry about that!"

"It's OK, Max."

They opened their suitcases. Max looked at his with surprise."

"Why is all this feminine stuff in my suitcase?"

"That's because you have mine, and I have yours, Max!"

"Oh, yeah!"

They switched suitcases. Then they changed into their pajamas.

"It's late, and I'm bushed!," 99 said. "I think I'll go to bed. Turn the light off, Max."

"All right."

She got in the bed. He turned the light off. He then got a plush chair that was in the room, put in at the foot of the bed, by her legs, and sat in it.

"I'll sleep here?"

"Max!"

"No, really. If someone comes in the room, I can defend you better."

She sighed. "Suit yourself."

He stretched his legs on the bed, and they settled to sleep.

However, just a few seconds later, 99 began giggling.

"What's so funny, 99?"

"Stop tickling my foot, Max?"

"I'm not tickling your foot!"

"You're not?"

"No. 99, stay as still as you can."

He got up and turned the main light on. Then he went back to the bed. He carefully pulled the covers off of her legs.

A scorpion was standing on her left foot!

"Max!"

"Like I said, keep still. And try to stay calm!"

"Yes, Max."

He went to the bathroom and picket up a wash cloth. Then he went back over to 99.

The creature stood on her foot for several seconds. Finally, it started crawling up her leg. It walked onto the blankets.

Max quickly put the cloth over it. He scooped it, picket it up, and ran into the bathroom. He threw the scorpion into the toilet and flushed it. Then he went back to her.

"Are you all right, 99?"

"I think so. Thanks, Max—you saved my life!"

"All in a day's work! Let me check your foot."

He went over and inspected it. "There doesn't appear to be any marks, or spots on it. Does it hurt?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Where you're pressing down too hard, Max!"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry about that, 99!"

"Max, we'd better check the bed to see if there are other 'surprises' in it."

"Good idea, 99."

She got up, and they pulled the covers off. But they didn't see anything else suspicious there. So they put the covers back on. They also looked around the room, but didn't find anything else unusual.

"We might as well go back to bed, Max."

"All right. And I think I will 'sleep with you'-in a matter of speaking."

She smiled. "That's better, Max!"

He turned the lights off, and went to bed together.

"Good night, Max."

"Good night, 99."

The rest of the night passed uneventfully.
