A Young Mind
Owl opened his eyes to the world for the first time, gasping as he saw the huge birth den. 'It's so big!' he thought, eyes shining. He stood up on his small legs and started walking to explore, curious about the many things in the world. Suddenly, his foot bumped into a soft bundle of fur and he looked down. 'That must be my sister!' he thought, noticing his sister's smell. He has never known that Dark was that color, like the dark. He had been exploring the past few days, before he had opened his eyes, so he knew many things already. He looked up and saw his sleeping mother, so he jumped over to her and buried his head in her light fur.
She awoke and smiled down at him. "Hello my dear Owl."
He looked up and smiled at her. "Mom! I can see now!"
She gasped in pleasure and purred, "I always knew you would."
"What color am I? What color is Dark? What color are you?" Owl wondered to his mother.
She laughed and replied, "You are brown with a light brown chest and ears. You have black speckles on your chest, just like a barn owl. Dark is all black, like a raven. I am white, like the snow."
He looked confused, "What's snow? What are we?"
His mother smiled lovingly up. "I am named after snow."
Owl interrupted, "Snowfall!"
She smiled, "Yes. Snow falls from the sky when it is cold. It is white and glimmers like the sun. It's as cold as ice. We are wolves. We hunt our food."
He asked, "What's the sun? What's ice? What's the sky? What's-"
She interrupted, laughing, "Tomorrow, darling."
Owl smiled, yawned, and curled up to think. His mind was whirring with so much knowledge. 'I am the color of a barn owl, which is brown. Dark is the color of ravens, which are black. Momma is white, the color of snow. Snow falls from the sky and is cold. I am a wolf.' He thought. He was satisfied with what he had learned. His mother smiled, "It's been a tiring day, exploring your world that you thought you knew so well. Get some rest with your sister, love."
He sighed happily and nuzzled her, soon falling asleep. He dreamt of his exciting future days with his sister, fur tingling with the thought of learning so much more.
