A Kalas Remark

"Lyude, I don't care what you say or do, I will never trust you." With those parting words, Kalas walked out of the room leaving Lyude to muse.

He knew that he should feel hurt by the callous remark, but he just couldn't bring himself to. He had heard those words spoken many times from those same lips, but he knew the truth. He knew, deep down, that Kalas didn't mean them. He couldn't mean them.

It was all a front. One that he put on for the others so that they would never realize the truth. Lyude paused for a moment and briefly pondered why Kalas would feel the need to lie about the true nature of their friendship. He sighed and gave up trying to figure out why Kalas did anything he did. Sometimes he would act like he understood what was going on around him, but then other times Kalas seemed to not know which way was up and which was down.

Lyude deduced that Kalas' lack of sense came from either the fact that growing up in Mira would make anyone a little out of it, and that in some places you really couldn't tell which way was up and which was down, or that Kalas' hair was so big and puffy that he could not fit a fully functional brain under it.

Lyude laughed lightly. Kalas would definitely hit him if he knew he'd said that.

His mind wandered back to Kalas' callous remark. Why couldn't Kalas just come out and say that he liked him? He was sure it was true.

He walked over to the window and looked out. Kalas was below, talking with Xehla.

Lyude felt a small spark of envy that Kalas was able to talk so casually to Xelha, but not to him. He wondered if he would be branded as untrustworthy forever for that one small mistake he made, which was not his fault in the first place.

He dismissed the thoughts. He still knew a side of Kalas that he was sure even Xelha was not privy to.

As he peered down at the two members of his group, his eyes widened in alarm. Kalas had begun to glow. Xelha staggered back with a look that was somewhere between alarm and fascination.

When the light dimmed, the place where Kalas had once been located was now occupied by a large whale. The massive mammal, once thought extinct, was the same pale blue shade Kalas' hair had been.

He heard Xelha yell for the others in their group as well as himself. He looked to the side of the building to see Gibari, followed by Savyna, exit below. The Great Mizuti could be seen floating up the bridge toward the plethora of people who had congregated around the whale.

Lyude stumbled back to the bed he and Kalas had shared only a short while ago, and sighed loudly. The sheets were still warm from their combined heat, and the pillow had a subtle hint of Kalas' natural aroma lingering on it. He supposed that he should dress himself and go down there with his friends, and now former lover, and try to figure out what just happened.

He said former because he was not sleeping with a whale.

He wondered, as he descended the stairs, what Kalas was thinking right now.

*******

"Great," thought Kalas. "Now I'm going to have to find an ocean."
