The Night Before
Sully stretched out next to the fire and looked up at the stars. Since he'd finished building the new homestead, he had spent his nights inside, but tonight was different. Tomorrow he would marry Michaela, and he felt the need to sleep outside one more night, as to close that chapter in his life.
As he laid back and looked at the multitude of stars above him, the thoughts about the past week, the past three years, and what would happen tomorrow swirled in his head. Never in his dreams had he ever thought that his life would have turned out the way it had, not the least of which was falling in love again. Michaela completed him in every way, and tomorrow he would make it official.
Sully sighed and turned onto his side. He scratched Wolf behind the ears; his faithful friend was curled up beside him, as he settled. He let his eyes slowly drift closed, but they weren't that way long before he heard a voice call his name.
"Hello, Sully."
Sully's eyes popped open and he sat up abruptly at the sound of a voice he had not heard in five years.
"Abigail?" He croaked out, his voice cracking with shock.
"You look well." She said, sitting down opposite him in front of the small fire he had started.
Sully sat there agape, not sure how to respond.
"I have to say, I like the tan. You were always so pale working in the mines."
"Not much sun down there." Sully was able to quip, looking down at the fire. "Abigail, it not that I ain't glad to see you, but, why are you here?" he looked back up at her.
"I know what tomorrow is, and…I just wanted to say, that I'm happy for you."
"Really?"
Abigail's image nodded. "I mean, I'll admit when Dr. Quinn first came around I wasn't too happy with her. I thought that she would make you forget about me…"
"You were jealous?" Sully couldn't hide the smirk.
"Don't look so smug." Abigail quipped before sobering. "Anyway, I visited her, at the homestead."
Again, Sully's face turned to a shocked expression.
"I wanted her to leave."
"Abigail, there's no way Michaela'd ever make me forget about you…" Sully stated.
"I know that, now. She even said that to me…"
"She did?"
"She said she didn't want you to forget about me. It was before you told each other how you felt, but she knew she loved you then. She said to me that if she'd been there, she would have done everything in her power to save me."
Sully's heart swelled with pride and love. "She woulda."
"Sully, I want you to be happy. You know, if I looked, I don't think I coulda found anyone better for you than her…and you found her first."
Sully smiled as he looked over at Abigail. "Thank you, Abigail…for lovin' me…for showin' me what love was…ya know there will always be a part of you with me."
"I know. Just love her, with all of your heart, ok?"
"I already do."
Abigail smiled as she stood up. Then she leaned over to him, and kissed Sully on his forehead. "Goodbye, Sully."
Then, as quickly as she had shown up, Abigail was gone.
That next morning, when Sully woke up, what had transpired the night before ran through his head. He fingered the braid that hung over his left shoulder. He knew that there would always be a part of Abigail that would stay with him, and then, he decided, there was a way that there would always be a part of him with her as well.
