Disclaimer: If I owned it, Dean would be Ben's father (still haven't given up hope on that one, if I'm honest), and he would be living with the Braedens, and he would be happy, damn it. So, clearly, I don't own Supernatural.

AN: This was written in an attempt to regain my sanity post 6x21. Because dude. Dude. I don't even have words for that episode that are appropriate. But this makes me feel better, so without further adieu:

Whispers of Knights in Shining Armour

...

Sometimes Lisa has strange dreams.

Dreams of a knight in shining armour who rides in and saves her, only his armour is made of worn leather and the only time he shines is when his grin flashes in the darkness.

He's tall – yet not the tallest – and he's dark and he's most definitely handsome.

She knows he is, and yet she can never see his face, no matter how hard she tries.

He's always half hidden in the shadow, or the collar of his jacket it turned up, or he's facing mostly away from her and all she can see of him is the vaguest of profiles.

She wishes she could see him properly. In the light, with his collar down, facing her fully.

She just wants to know what he looks like.

She wants to know who she's thanking.

And she does thank him rather a lot.

She thanks him ever time he saves her, and that... well, that's almost nightly.

Because every time she has a nightmare – every single time – he shows up and saves her.

He rides in on that black horse of his that makes the ground shake like thunder and he swoops in and he saves her from the monsters (and what strange monsters they are, with their empty black eyes and their scaly, flaky skin and their mouths that look like they could drill a hole right through you).

He saves her, and he saves Ben, and the thinks that... she thinks that maybe they could be happy.

Maybe her knight in shining armour could stay, and maybe Ben could have a Dad, and maybe they could be a family.

She has nothing to base such a whim on, of course, but for the fact that he saves her every single time she needs saving and she's never felt so safe with anyone else.

And she knows that there will always be another person that needs saving – another monster that needs killing – but she thinks that she would wait for him, and he would return to her, and they would make it work.

But before she gets the chance to say any of that – before she can even try to convince him – he half turns to look at her and he smiles this sad little smile and she thinks that in the half light she can see a tear making its way down his cheek, and he says, "Goodbye Lisa," and then he's gone.

Gone to the darkness; gone to that big thundering horse to ride off into the setting sun; gone to save good people and hunt bad things and never get anything more than a word of thanks (and not even that, sometimes, she thinks).

And always she wakes up with his name just on the wrong side of her lips (and that's strange in itself because his name is never mentioned in her dreams and she can never think of it when she's awake, but she knows it).

And she looks at the other side of her bed and wonders why it feels so wrong that it's empty.

And she feels like she's lost something that she doesn't know what it feels like to have.

...end...

AN: If they don't fix this, I'm gonna be so freaking cross (and devastated and distressed and distraught and shattered and a whole range of other not-nice emotions). Seriously. Dean has to get his happy ending, and the only happy ending he's going to get is with Lisa and Ben. So they had better fix this.

Note: I HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE SEASON 6 FINALE, SO PLEASE MAKE NOT MENTION OF IT UNTIL AFTER MONDAY 15TH AUGUST! Thank you very much.
