A/N - Again, this is set in the Little Sunshine Universe, but it can be read as a stand-alone with no connection anything... Just a drabble trying to capture what a father might feel seeing his little girl lying camatose... Enjoy, and drop a review to tell me what you think!
AN INFINITY AWAY
He waits in the endless silence,
A moment suspended in the endless march of time,
She lies before him, a mirage;
Numbly, he wonders where she would be.
A kiss to her brow and his heart constricts,
The monitor beside him goes lub-dub, thud-thud,
Alive though she maybe, he cannot reach her,
Just infinity away, he thinks.
He slips into the past, the clock rewinding,
And sees before his eyes her birth,
Small and tiny, screaming when he picked her up.
And now, years later, as fragile as she'd been then.
Where is she, he wonders? Is it the cliché?
In a dark room? Can she hear my voice?
Or does she sleep alone,
Waiting to awaken and laugh with her childish innocence?
An infinity away, that's where she is,
An infinity encompassing both their lives,
And the promise of tomorrow vanishing,
Leaving him a bereft father,
Alone and listening to their forlorn heartbeats in sync.
