A/N not mine, I own nothing but the plot.
I'm back! My other phone took a dump and I lost everything that I was working on. This is just a small drabble to get me back k into the swing of things.
Simple is Best
Loving you is the most exquisite form of self torture. ~ Unknown
She wasn't entirely surprised by her godsons question, but she hadn't been entirely prepared for it either. No one else had ever bothered to ask her why she never settled down or had children. Her handsome and sweet twenty year old godsons, however, was not like anyone else. He was his father's son, after all.
She must have taken longer than expected to respond, because he began to speak, "Aunt P, it's okay. You don't have to tell me if you're uncomfortable. "
"No Hank, that's not it at all. You just caught me off guard. Why do you want to know?" She asked.
"Pops and I were talking the other day, and it got me thinking about a few thing. I don't want certain things that I've seen happen to other, happen in my life."
"Oh, my handsome prince," she sighed. "This wa a choice that I made for the greater good."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Simple is going to be the best way to answer this," she paused. "I can not say that I didn't dream of a family of my own. That would be lying to you. I can't say that I never fell in love, because I did. In fact I'm still in love with him.
"I knew, without a single doubt in my mind, that as much as I was and am in love with him, he wasn't in love with me. I tried to move on with my life and find someone else, but he kept drawing me back into his life. So, I settled for what we are today. He has a beautiful wife and family that he loves with everything he has to give. I decided that the best thing would be for me to just be happy for him and watch from the outside."
"Did you ever tell him how you feel?"
"Sweet boy, I did. It just wasn't enough for him. He needed someone who could be not only his support, but the beauty on his arm."
"If he was that shallow then he wasn't worthy of you, not the other way around," Hank sagely told her.
"He was and still is one of the best people I know, Hank. He has always had a heart of gold and would do anything for his friends and those of us he considers family."
"Was it worth it?"
She closed her eyes and recalled the first time the man in question called her 'Baby Girl', her heart had been lost to him from that moment on.
A small smile graced her face as she replied, "It was more than worth it."
Hank only nodded his head and sat quietly thinking about everything she had just told him. Maybe simple was best.
