The Promise
Nikki was scared. I know what you're asking yourself; why was the adventurous Nikki scared? Well, she was starting her new school tomorrow. Nikki was sitting on her bed, with her chin on her knees, and her arms wrapped around her knees. Nikki had always been the outcast in her schools, which included her being ignored by everyone, including teachers. She was never physically bullied, but the fact that students and even teachers pretended to ignore her made her scared and sad.
Before Nikki could dwell on those thoughts, the door to her room opened, and in came her adoptive mother, Gwen. Gwen had become Nikki's mother over the summer, after her mother had been put in jail for child neglect when she was found in her house for two days all by herself without food. Gwen had willingly took her in, as the two had gotten close over the summer, with Nikki even confessing the dark things that went on in her home, including the real reason she had a bandage on her cheek.
Nikki looked up at Gwen, who had a guitar in her hand. Gwen sat down on the side of her bed, next to Nikki, who still had tears at the corner of her eyes. Gwen started strumming notes on her guitar before she began singing.
Today, you don't want to get out of bed.
There are so many thoughts in your head.
Like you'd be better off dead, better off dead
But let me tell you,
there's a whole world waiting for you.
It's hard to believe but it's true.
Nikki looked at Gwen playing the guitar in awe, like she was seeing a shooting star right in front of her. Gwen looked at her with an unusually bright smile on her face.
So just hold on for me, hold on for me.
Cause' I believe if you stay,
My heart would break, just hold on.
Cause' you are so beautiful.
I promise you this, I promise you this
and you are more than capable.
Just believe in yourself and nobody else is listening
Gwen put her guitar down, and gave Nikki a hug, rubbing her back. Nikki, who was still recovering from the shock of receiving a serenade, took another minute before returning the hug to her adoptive mother.
"Mom," Nikki said, looking up at Gwen while still wrapped in a hug. Gwen looked down at her with a smile on her face, with a look in her eyes that urged her to continue. "I don't feel as scared as I was before."
"Well, it looks like I did my job then," Gwen responded, finally letting go of Nikki with a smile on her face that was only rivaled by the one Nikki had on her face.
"Nobody's ever done something like that for me before. Thank you Mom, I love you," Nikki said, laying down, resting her head on Gwen's leg. Gwen smiled back, giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"I love you too Nikki," Gwen responded, running a hand through Nikki's hair while she continued to rest on Gwen's leg.
