High And Tight
Gen Fic. Sequel to Tooth Faery.
I own nothing.
"I can't believe Dad let them do this to me."
"It's a boxcar barber in the middle of a desert, the closest thing around is a military base. The place is even named High And Tight, what did you think they were going to do? Feather it?... Y'know, Dad did this for a good reason don't you? Long hair makes you vulnerable in a fight, gives them something to control you with."
" I look like…like…You." Sam couldn't look at his reflection any longer.
"Like that's a bad thing? The ladies love my hair, maybe that hair will balance out that geek thing you got goin' and give you a chance with the girls." Dean grinned.
"The girls liked my other hair just fine! And what does it matter anyways, we would just move away and leave them!"
"They liked your normal hair eh? Sammy's got a girlfriend! Sammy's got a girlfriend!"
"IT'S Sam! And I do not!"
"I gotta admit Sammy, you're cute but I didn't think you were cute enough to cover the geekboy thing…It's the librarian isn't it? I gotta say, you are a braver man than I, she is like 60, but props on getting an older woman."
"I hate you."
John walked up along side the car and tossed two cokes and a brown bag to the boys in the back seat. He got behind the wheel, started the car and got back on the dusty highway. The boys opened the brown bag and found two turkey sandwiches, two apples, a package of peanut M&Ms, a package of Skittles and a plastic baggie. Sam reached in and pulled the baggie out.
"What the-" Sam looked thoroughly confused. Dean cackled "Nice one dad!"
John laughed and adjusted the rearview mirror so he could better see his youngest sons face.
"Dean said you were having trouble parting with those locks of yours and asked to let you keep them."
Dean blushed "That's not what I meant! And you weren't supposed to TELL him!"
John laughed again and looked back to see Dean suddenly engrossed in something outside his window and Sam holding the bag of hair and smiling at his big brother.
"Thanks Dean."
"Shut up."
Sam leaned to hug Dean who pinned himself against the door in a failed attempt to escape the embrace. Dean was never much for touchy feely stuff when other people were around, especially his father.
"Geez Sammy, cut it out! I only asked him so you would stop whining, and it didn't do any good did it? You still had to get your hair cut. Stop acting like such a girl."
Sam sighed and moved back to his side of the car. Dean may act like a jerk most of the time, but when he wasn't careful his real feelings would slip through. Sam knew his brother loved him, he just needed a reminder ever now and again, and he had to admit his new hair cut felt cooler in the heat than his previous one, especially with the highway air coming through the open windows. He laid back with his arm against the door and feel asleep.
Dean reached into his pocket and pulled out the lock of Sam's hair he nicked from the floor at the barbers, he had gone outside while Dad and Sam were still getting cut and used a lighter to burn the ends together on one side. He would never admit it but he really did love Sammy's hair. He twirled it around his fingers for awhile watching Sammy sleep until he felt his own eyelids getting heavy. After making sure John wasn't watching he reached into his duffle at his feet and pulled out a small wooden box. It was the same box he kept Sammy's baby teeth in. Not that he would ever admit to it if Sam or his father ever found it. He opened the small box and placed the lock of hair inside among the baby teeth.
