Melody Maker

ESME'S POV

It's been some time since I've heard Edward playing the piano. I, Esme, have a soft spot in my un-beating heart for him. He was the first of many kids to join Carlisle, and I have known him since I was changed. He's like my son.

Lately though, when he found out that this human—who, for some reason, he couldn't read her mind—was his singer, he seemed sadder. He left, and when he came back, he stopped playing the piano. I kept it dust free and hoped that he'd play some more, but he hasn't yet.

Coming home from hunting, I thought I heard an intricate balance of notes and quietness. I didn't expect to see what I saw when we got home, though. Edward was at his piano. When he realized I was there, he came out to me.

"Esme, I have something to show you," he told me, a smile that reached his eyes on his face for the first time in months.

"Yes, Edward?" I said, following him in the house as everyone else came in behind us.

He got on his piano seat, one that has been unused for too long, and rested his fingers on the keys.

When they started to move, a lovely melody flowed through the room, with a quiet and beautiful harmony backing it up. If we weren't vampires, there'd be no way for him to play it alone; it would have taken multiple Mozart's to do so.

The song wasn't overly sweet, it was just...great. It had hints of sadness that reminded me of my human life, of what he was going through now, but it made me feel something else, that I couldn't quite place.

I loved seeing him so happy, seeing him whole, when he wasn't for so long.

As the intricate song finished, he turned and smiled at me. I realized that I was smiling.

"How do you like it?" He asked, hope in his eyes.

"I love it," I answered truthfully, "It may just be the best music I've ever heard."

He laughed happily, and I felt the wholeness and love reflect off him. His heart was whole, and, just knowing that my lovely Edward was so happy, once again, made me happy. Just the fact that he wasn't as sad--as affected--by the human girl, made me happy. But, yet again, something else was different about him, that made him seem more whole that before Bella had come.

It didn't really matter--whatever was different about him--though, because he was happy. He smiled, laughed, his eyes sparkled with happiness, and he no longer wore that frown that has been so common on his face recently.

My Edward is, once again, a melody maker.

a/n I know it's short, and probably poorly written, but this is just the first copy. If I ever feel like working on my writing and spending hours a day rewriting everything on my pages, I'll rewrite it.
