Quills.
'Is a spell to levitate things. However, you must make sure you pro-'
Snap.
James sighed. That was the fifth quill he had broken since entering the library. His parents had let him use muggle pens at home; he was new the whole feather quill thing.
'Oi, Sirius.' The boy next to him looked up from his messy scrawled Transfiguration essay, at the sound of his name. 'Have you got a spare quill?'
Sirius shook his head, 'Sorry Mate, you used my last one.'
James' eyes searched the library, looking for someone to ask.
His eyes came to a standstill and the red headed girl sat on her own. It was Lily Evans. During the month they had attended school together he had barely spoken to her. No one had spoken to her other than the slimy git in Slytherin, and the Jones girl. In the one month, she had already attained an image of teachers pet. She was the smartest witch, and many people hated her for it.
'Excuse me, Evans right?' Her eyes barely glanced up before returning to her homework. One quill in her hand, another sat beside her.
'Potter.'
'Could I borrow a quill?'
'No,' she answered shortly.
'Umm, please?'
She placed her pen down. 'Nice to see you do have manners in your head.'
James was confused. 'So, can I have the quill?'
'No.'
'But you've got two!'
'One might break.'
'What if I promise not to break it?'
'You've just broken 5 quills, and even if you don't break it. You might steal it.'
James practically growled at the girl in front of him, before grabbing his essay off the table Sirius was now carving into and walked back to Lily, ignoring Sirius' voice 'HE LEFT ME! AND FOR A GIRL! JAMESIEPOO! I THOUGHT WE HAD SOMETHING!'
'Look, I won't break it, and I brought my stuff here so I can't steal it.'
'Fine. Just do your essay and then get out of my sight.'
'Yes Miss', James went back to his work as the librarian kicked his friend out.
'Ummm, Evans. Sirius took the ink, could I borrow yours?'
She slammed a pot of emerald green on the table.
'This is all you can use.'
James nodded, cringing as the green ink stained the page next to the black.
'So Lily-'
'It's Evans to you.'
'Evans, right...'
There was silence, only the sound of scratching quills.
'So Evans, you want to go out sometime?'
'We're stuck in a castle Potter. What do you think?'
'I'll take that as a yes'
'No thanks, I think I skip that offer. Now shut up, I'm trying to work.'
Silence returned.
'Lily-'
'EVANS'
'Okaaay! Evans, who said the spell wrong and got a buffalo on their chest?'
'Potter. Shut up. Go ask one of your bum boys.'
'Marauders...'
James watched as Lily's face reddened to the colour of her hair.
'James Potter. If you want children, I suggest you leave me in peace.'
'Okaaay...'
Silence.
SNAP
'You have 10 seconds to run.'
James never ran so fast in his life.
