Hello to all! This is my first book, so take it easy on me. If I see any comments I like, I'll respond to them in the next chapter. My protagonist's name is Max Callahan, and he's a true badass. I'll write his full story later on, but for now, on with the chapter!
Max was in pain, immense pain. He felt the blood pouring from his wounds, making a pool around him. At this point his implants would do nothing. The suited men had their way with him before leaving him to rot in a cell filled with feces and blood. Still, they failed to break his resolve, and that comforted him. Death would arrive soon. Multiple ghastly humanoids, most likely spirits, began arriving. They looked sad, yet happy at the same time, and waited patiently to take his soul away. Max smiled at them. The blood flowing out of his wounds began to slow down. This was the true end. Another spirit arrived holding a brilliant orb. It was mainly a bright orange, but had specks of yellow that met to form a core at its center. It was a lord soul. The spirit placed it next to Max with a bright smile. He weakly reached out to stroke its brilliant flames. Max, I'm sorry I couldn't save you. It sad with a saddened voice. No, it was my fault Ember. Don't stress. The lord soul seemed to dim. It was an honor to be with you. He smiled. It was getting difficult to breath, for blood had filled his esophagus. His eyelids grew heavy. A spirit put the lord soul in his hand and clutched it into a fist. It took a few seconds for Max to die. An angel picked up his limp body and ascended into the heavens. Let's go Max, we've earned this eternal rest. The spirits floated upwards, their slender forms passing through the concrete ceiling.
Max awoke in a beautiful valley. Flowers and pure green grass lined the dirt, with some trees here and there. He saw a silent stream in front of him, multiple forms of life at its edges. The wasteland legend swore he heard birds chirping in the distance. It brought him to tears. This was the afterlife? It was truly amazing. He put a hand in the stream and felt the pure, clean water. Not even a trace of detectable radiation. What now? Ember was right, what would they do now? It irked him to have nothing to do. Max decided to sit down. I don't know Ember. What now? A roar got his attention. Acting on instinct, the wasteland legend leapt up and summoned a lightning spear, pointing it to where the sound came from. He waited a few seconds. His heart pumped adrenaline through his body, unlocking the full potential of his trained muscles. Everything he saw became a little bit saturated, an effect of enhanced adrenaline. Max's sensitive ears picked up rapid footfalls in the distance. A large black blur shot out of the shrubbery and barreled towards him. He threw the spear at the creature, killing it in one hit. It was a jet black wolf with a white bone crest adorning it's head. Before Max could make any further observations, the creature disinterested into dust. Huh, that was odd...MAX, BEHIND YOU! Before he could react, something rammed his back and pushed him to the ground. It was another one of the creatures, only more larger and muscular. The wasteland legend held its head away from his vital arteries and pushed it off him. He quickly got up and wrestled with it. They were at a stalemate for close to a minute, but Max gained the upper hand and began to overpower it. He slammed its body into a tree and heard a loud crack. The creature disinterested like its counterpart. He heard gunshots in the distance. Looks like we're back in action. Max ran at speeds no human could ever hope to achieve. He heard the classic sounds of war, gunshots, explosions, and screams. It brought back a certain nostalgia to him, it was something he couldn't explain. The fighting was getting louder by the second. The wasteland legend leaped into the air and activated his many implants. Time slowed to a screeching halt. Another creature was attacking four teenagers. This one was more muscular than the previous two and way larger. Max shifted his attention to the aforementioned teenagers. They all had different melee weapons that looked useless. When he saw they could also transform into guns, his disdain was multiplied by a factor of six googolplexes. Their elegant appearance impressed Max, but it left multiple openings for debris to jam vital mechanisms. Max, it's been twenty attoseconds, you should really consider your choice of option. Ember said. Okay, buddy. This creature looks tougher than the rest and my angle puts me at a disadvantage. Should I use a lightning steak? Ember hummed in thought. Yeah, that seems like a good idea. Aim for the neck. The wasteland legend summoned a lightning steak and lifted it over his head. The electricity warmed his hands and shined with a brilliant yellow. He saw the teens cover their eyes. At least he wouldn't have to worry about their eyesight. The steak slammed into the creature's neck with a loud sonic boom, shaking the nearby foliage. Before it even knew what hit it, the creature was dead and disinteresting into ashes. Max landed gracefully, rolling to minimize the impact. He turned around and saw their shocked faces. He gave a bow. That was epic Max, ten out of ten, would watch again. His ears picked up more rapid footfalls. The wasteland legend summoned a great lightning spear and aimed it into the woods. Another creature even larger than the last one tried to blitz him. What an idiot, doesn't he know that when Hitler tried it, he failed miserably? The spear landed right between its eyes, killing it. The teenagers were even more wide eyed. Half of them had their mouths ajar in pure shock and wonder.
"I think introductions are in order. My name is Max Callahan." For a solid two minutes, nobody said anything. It was incredibly awkward. One of the teens, a girl with a scythe and hood, walked towards him. He was getting a little red riding hood vibe from her choice of apparel. A muscular blond put a hand on her shoulder and pulled her back. Their whispers were too low for normal hearing, but the wasteland legend's senses were honed by years of experience and implants.
"He could be dangerous, Ruby. Look how he annihilated that Ursa Major!" She brushed her hand off with an annoyed look.
"Why did he help us, then? If he was hostile like you said, all he could've done was leave us here to become Ursa chow. Also, it's fun to meet new people. What if he's interested in weapons?!" She walked to him, leaving the girl she spoke too with a dumbfounded expression. Once she was close enough, the teen stuck her hand out.
"My name's Ruby Rose. It's a pleasure to meet you, Max." He shook her hand. She had a very firm handshake.
"You made a nice point back there Ruby." Max said, surprising the girl. Before she could speak, he cut her off. "Yes, I could hear you, and with ease too."
"Sorry about my sister, she's a tad bit overprotective." He nodded. "Speaking of sisters, why don't you introduce yourself Yang?" The blonde sighed. Max repressed a smile.
"My name is Yang, he's Ren, she's Nora, and you've already met Ruby here." Yang gave Ruby an evil glare that almost put Marko to shame, key word almost. The wasteland legend fondly remembered how he indulged in his screams of pain. The bastard got what was coming to him.
"Before you say anything else, how did you throw that lightning bolt? It was lightning right?"
"I was merely using an ancient practice of miracles. I believe in a tale made by powerful individuals, recite it, and the miracle is casted. It's much more complicated than that, but we need to go. We're wide open." Ren nodded and led the way through the forest. Well Max, it looks like we're not in Kansas anymore. I think that's a major understatement Ember. I don't think we're on earth anymore.
The rest of the walk was uneventful, save for some creatures attacking the group. Max saw them in action, and needless to say, he was disappointed. Their movesets were based on elegance and left several openings, much like their weapons. Wherever he was had horrible fighting styles. Even if they were flawed, they got the job done. The creatures never stood a chance. His ears picked up the sound of a large bird beating its wings against the air. It got louder and louder until he could see it above him. The creature was a black grey color and resembled a small wyvern. Max summoned a sunlight spear and chucked it at the oversized bird. The spear melted flesh and snapped bones. The group looked up and saw the bird falling, leaving a trail of smoke behind it.
"That was one big nevermore! Are these 'miracles' that strong?! Oh, I want to do that! Teach me so I can break people's bodies!" Nora yelled. Ren face palmed and restrained the babbling teen. Max was amazed at the blankness of his face. It was like he was used to this. A creature he hadn't heard jumped from the shrubbery and tried to tackle him. The wasteland legend grabbed its head and slammed it into a tree, satisfied with the loud crack. Another attacked Ruby, who used her scythe to decapitate it. More and more struck are the group, forcing them into a small circle. Max punched one's nose and broke the bone crest, kicking it shortly afterwards. He gave another a massive haymaker that literally splattered its skull. Yang punched another so hard it's entire body disinterested. Nora was hammering away with her gigantic hammer that put the royal executioner's to shame. Max kneeled and uttered a prayer, casting the tranquil walk of peace. The creatures slowed down to a small shuffle, allowing the group to dispatch them with ease.
"What was with that gigantic Grimm horde? Maybe Max's lightning bolt attracted them. Regardless, thanks for that miracle, it was a miracle right?" So they're called Grimm? That's one step of progress.
"You're welcome, and yes it was a miracle. It was called the tranquil walk of peace, slows down anyone or anything you consider your enemy, all while keeping your allies mobile. It was considered an elementary miracle by clerics who used to cast it, one of the first things they learned, I believe. Enough of my rambling, let's go." Max said.
"When we get back to Beacon, I want to know more about these miracles." Yang said with a small hint of excitement. Beacon, huh? Probably their school. Max was confused. School? How'd you come to that conclusion? Well, their demeanor screams student, they have matching clothes, and their fighting styles excel in some areas but lack in others, just like a beginner of martial arts. Ember said like was the most obvious thing in the world. I didn't notice the matching clothes, guess I was too focused on combat.
The group arrived at a large temple-like structure. Cracks covered its stone surface under a thick layer of vines and moss. A large hole seemed to be the only entrance. Max looked around and closed his eyes, focusing on his hearing. In this state his hearing put every other living thing to shame. He could hear a pin drop from sixty miles away, and that wasn't an exaggeration. He heard people's conversations, screams, heartbeats, pulses, and much more. The wasteland legend opened his eyes and informed them of the lack of Grimm. Ruby entered the temple and came out covered in cobwebs. He produced a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her. Boone was right when he said to always keep a handkerchief. She thanked him and wiped the cobwebs from her hood and cape. When she was done he pocketed it and stood guard. One by one they went in and came out with chess pieces. Max wondered why, but knew it was rude to think about it.
"Okay, we've got the chess pieces. Let's get back to Beacon!" Yang said with happiness. Max could understand it, almost everyone in the group had a close encounter with death. All of the sudden, he sidestepped and narrowly avoided a sharp...feather? Before he could think, even more descended on them, forcing the group to take cover. A "nevermore" as Nora called it flew through the air. It let out a loud caw. This one seemed more intelligent than the last one, it was flying erratically to avoid damage. A well-placed sunlight spear would fix that. Max tried to aim, but it's sharp feathers forced him back to cover. Ruby was trying to hit the nevermore with her scythe gun, but most of her shots missed. The ones that hit only scratched its hide. They needed a plan, and fast. The oversized bird was getting lower and lower by the second, which made its attacks ten times more accurate.
"MAX, USE ONE OF YOUR MIRACLES!" Yang screamed.
"I CAN'T, IT'S KEEPING ME PINNED!" He shouted back before dodging a feather barrage.
"THINK OF A PLAN THEN! WE'RE GONNA BE DEAD MEAT SOON!" Max scrolled through his pip-boy for something, anything. He materialized a rocket launcher, but that only pissed the thing off. Nothing was working when something clicked.
"EVERYONE, LET IT TOUCH THE GROUND SO I CAN IMMOBILIZE IT!" The group nodded and hid in the foliage. The Nevermore landed on the ground with a loud thud. Max muttered a few words in an ancient tongue and the large beast was immobilized. The group rushed to kill it, but Ruby stayed behind to take potshots at its head. Her attacks weakened the creature, but did little to hurt it. Yang was hammering away at its torso, and Nora was smashing its wings and limbs with her hammer. The Grimm shrieked in pain when her hammer broke the bones in its large wing. Max jumped into the air and summoned a lightning steak, which was aimed at the creature's head. It struck with a boom even louder than its predecessor, not only shaking foliage but breaking branches of off of trees. Others in the group were pushed back a few feet. The creature lay still with a gigantic hole in its cranium, disinteresting into dust a few moments later.
One hour later...
Max was impressed by this world's architecture. It was like the beautiful city of Anor Londo, which he once guarded as a sliver knight. It pained him to think of the city's fate. Apparently, a pontiff took over and killed almost every living thing in its walls. He stopped more of those thoughts from forming, they would do him no good. Beacon was amazingly spacious and comfortable, it's walls and floors kept very clean. The wasteland legend was escorted by two gruff men in black futuristic armor to an elevator. After a long few minutes of awkward silence, the door opened and they stepped into a large office. A large desk was in the middle, with multiple file cabinets and tables behind it. Some potted plants adorned each corner of the room. The man sitting at the desk looked old, but young at the same time. His hair was as white as snow and spectacles rested on his nose. I'm getting an odd vibe from this guy, can you scan him Ember. Okay, give me six attoseconds. Max waited for said amount of time. He has power, and lots of it. I easily dwarf him, which means you do as well, but he'll be a difficult bugger to take on. Can you give me someone to compare his power to? He's between Ornstein and Artorias. Max walked forward and offered a handshake to the man, who gladly took it. The wasteland legend noticed his tall height for a human, but he dwarfed him by a solid two feet.
"Hello sir, my name is Max Callahan. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Likewise. My name is Ozpin, and I am the headmaster if this academy. Please, have a seat." Max did so.
"It has come to my attention that you have been on the grounds of Beacon academy without previous authorization. This is a federal offense under the Vale Student Protection Law, section nine, paragraph four. It carries a jail time of three years and a fine of 2100 lien. Normally these men would cart you off to a penitentiary, but today is not a normal day." Ozpin beckoned to one of the men. "Can you bring Ruby Rose to my office? She is in her newly assigned dormitory." The man saluted and marched off. The old man turned to face him. "She will be here shorty. My cameras saw what you did to those Grimm. What did you do and how did you do it?" Max was on edge from this man. First he threatened to imprison him, and now he expected him to reveal his secrets.
"Why should I tell you? You threatened to incarcerate me a few seconds ago. I will tell you of my powers if you give me one reason why I should trust you." Ozpin hummed in thought.
"We haven't tried to arrest you. It's obvious you have a power that dwarfs my own, and that could be seen as a threat. No matter how powerful you are, you cannot escape an entire military." Max pondered his words. The old man had a point, but he hid from militaries before.
"Okay, I will tell you my powers. I was using the power of miracles, an art hundreds of thousands of years old. When I think of a miracle and believe in its power, it allows me to cast it. As an example I will cast a heal miracle." Max took out a knife and stabbed himself in the gut, shocking the remaining guard and causing Ozpin to raise an eyebrow. The wasteland legend knelt and muttered an ancient prayer. A circle of runes appeared around him, each one emitting a yellow and white light. His wounds quickly disappeared and were replaced by a scar. Ozpin nodded. "As you saw on your security footage, miracles aren't limited to healing. There are over twenty other miracles I can use, or roughly ninety eight percent of them."
"Interesting. Perhaps you could..." The elevator door opened and Ruby stepped out. She seemed to by missing her scythe, probably in her dorm Ozpin mentioned. "Hello, Ruby. Please have a seat." She took a seat next to Max and smiled at him. He smiled back. "Now Ruby, tell us about mister Callahan here."
"Me and my group were walking through the woods, when all of the sudden a gigantic Ursa ambushed us! We were losing against it, but Max here showed up and killed it! It was so awesome!" Ruby was practically screaming at that point. What are these people feeding their kids? Max thought. "Then we got into a standoff but he joined our group after, then we fought off a Grimm horde and Max killed two Nevermores!" Ozpin nodded and took a sip from a pure white mug.
"Ruby, calm down." Max said to the hyperventilating girl. Ember, what are her vitals? She has a BPM of 190, you need to calm her down. "Ruby, calm the hell down." BPM of 203. Why the hell isn't Ozpin doing anything? Max hoped it wouldn't come to this. He opened a pouch on his jumpsuit belt and took out a needle. After flicking it he jabbed it into her neck. BPM of 169, 120, and 100.
"Thanks...Max...I needed that..." Ruby slumped back into her chair and began to snore. Ozpin had a raised eyebrow.
"While Ruby is sedated, I think we should discuss some things, like enrolling you here. I can tell you have committed bad deeds in your past and hope for the opportunity to atone for them. By saving others you can do that. What do you say?" Max nodded after a few seconds of hesitation. The wasteland legend was startled by a loud yell.
"You're staying with us!? This is gonna be..." Ozpin held a hand up to silence her. Max was surprised the sedative wore off so quickly.
"It will be his decision to stay with your team. I don't want a student feeling uncomfortable in my school when it is unnecessary." Max silently thanked Ozpin.
"I'll admit that I'm unsure of such an affair, Ruby." She frowned and tried the oldest convincing technique in the book, puppy dog eyes. Like Artorias, the wasteland legend had an unbreakable will of steel, but nothing could stand up to that. "Okay, fine. If you insist Ruby."
"Yay! We can stay up late, play video games, read comics, talk about weapons, and so much more! Maybe you can tell me about miracles!" And I am become death, destroyer of worlds. Ember said dryly.
Ten minutes later...
"Hey guys, guess who joining our dorm?" Said dorm was medium sized with white walls and a large window. Bunk beds were on the left and right sides of the room with different sheets, pillows, and blankets. He recognized Yang, but there were two unknowns. One wore all black clothes, and the other wore a pure white dress. Her posture screamed spoiled and rich. I'd rate the one in black clothes with an "ow the edge". Max internally laughed.
"So you're staying here? Didn't Ozpin say only four people were allowed in a team?" Yang questioned.
"He's not joining our team, just staying in our dorm. Anyway, she's Weiss and she's Blake. Now, where should he sleep? I think Max is a tab bit too tall for a bunk." Ruby said.
"I'll sleep on the floor. It's no problem. In the meantime I'm going to treat myself to a shower." Max got up and walked to the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. Before he could undress, his sensitive eardrums picked up footfalls. "What?" He said.
"I'm going after you so hurry up." Who is that, Blake or Weiss? It's Weiss. Ember said with an annoyed tone.
"Yes master, your wish is my command." Everyone in the dorm was laughing crazily.
"Ugh!" The ice queen stomped away. Max set the shower temperature to cold and got to washing himself. Water was a scarce thing in the wastes, so he made sure to use as little as possible. It took two minutes for him to finish showering, surprising the girls. He walked out in the clothes he wore before, which were sanitized when they entered the data banks of his pip-boy. The wasteland legend sat down under the window and began meditating. When Gwyn's firstborn still resided in Anor Londo, Max often meditated with him, honing his mind. His breathing slowed and his heart barely beat, a technique that brought him as close to death as possible. He stayed in that state for an hour minutes before Yang tapped his shoulder.
"Yes, Yang?" He asked calmly.
"Sorry to interrupt your meditation, but I was wondering if you could show me some miracles, like you said you would back in the forest."
"I didn't make any promises, but okay. I need a large space though, preferably a training area. You know a place?" Yang put a hand on her chin as if in deep thought.
"Yeah, I know a place. It's just around the corner to our dorm, one of the few the staff keeps open twenty four seven." She said. Man nodded.
"Lead the way." He said. The walk took about three minutes tops. They saw new and old teams making their way to and fro, each one with different attire and some carrying weapons. They ranged from simple medieval weapons to complex gun/melee hybrids, which Max had already taken a disliking to. The arena was absolutely gigantic and full of training equipment. Instructors and spotters were on hand to help students as well. Once they found a private training room available for use, Yang turned to face him.
"Show me what these miracles can do." Max nodded.
"The first category of miracles is healing, and as you might've guessed, they heal you. Some do it overtime or in a few seconds. Two in this category can heal anyone around you that you consider an ally." Max stabbed himself, much to Yang's shock. He smiled at her shocked face. He used a healing miracle and his wound closed.
"Y-you don't have aura?" Max raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know what that is, but no, I don't have it."
"It's the manifestation of one's soul and provides protection from physical harm. How do you not know? Everyone on Remnant knows." Max hummed in thought. Ember, make a note about what she said. On it.
"I've lived in a far away mountain society for most of my life." Max lied. "Me and my friends were trying out an experimental miracle that teleported me here."
"That explains a lot, now that I think about it. Sorry for interrupting, please continue."
"Anyway, the next class of miracles is weapon augmentation. I can coat a weapon in lightning, dark energy, or blessed light." Max picked up the dagger and coated it in lightning. "It only lasts for a few minutes, but if you want it too it can last for hours." He threw the knife at a target, punching a hole through the wooden torso and scoring a direct bullseye.
"What you've seen me do in the forest with lightning is known as the attack category. I can throw bolts of lightning or orbs of energy. Two of my miracles allow me to summon swords from the ground that smite my enemies." Max summoned a sunlight spear and threw it at a metal target, demolishing it into small burnt pieces. "These can affect large areas if thrown into water. Unlike most electricity, rubber doesn't protect you. Next is bodily augmentation. This allows you to give yourself barriers and boost your strength." Max cast sacred oath and punched a training dummy so hard it broke into three small pieces.
"Finally we have the burden and deflection categories. They allow you to slow or immobile a moving object like I did in the forest, or deflect objects." Max gathered a group of training dummies and placed them around him. He casted wrath of the gods and sent them all flying backwards.
"And that wraps up miracles one o' one. It's getting late, so we should go back to the dorm and get some shut-eye." Yang nodded.
Almost everyone was gone or leaving, letting the two maneuver out of the room quicker. When they got back everyone in the team was preparing to sleep. Max brushed his teeth, shaved his beard to his preferred length, and got a spare pillow from the closet. He laid by the window and fell asleep incredibly quickly. Lights turned off all across the planet and people went to sleep peacefully. Others were planning things that would have planet-wide repercussions.
Undisclosed locations...
"Oz, I found something, something big."
"What is it, Crow?"
"The fall maiden herself. I'm keeping an eye on her, but she doesn't like me. Says I reek of booze and feces."
"I can agree with her there, but I think I've found something as equally big. A student just enrolled, and I can sense something from him. Its power, raw untamed power. From how I've seen him act, he's more than aware of it. Even worse, I think he's mastered its usage. I've seen hundreds of maidens and felt their power, but his absolutely dwarfs them."
"Tell me more."
"He uses what he claims is an ancient art called miracles. The students say he threw bolts of yellow lightning when he appeared during initiations. He can also heal from wounds with them."
"I'll be there in three weeks. Keep him in the academy and DO NOT expel him. Crow out."
Bunker on the edge of Vale...
"Cinder."
"Yes, sergeant?"
"We're tracking the fall maiden and preparing strike teams two and six for the job. The computer nuts say they've found a new entry in Beacon's database. It says the student is extremely powerful, maybe more so than the maidens."
"Keep tabs on him, if we can recruit him, do so immediately, if not, end him."
"Right away Cinder."
