Update (January 4, 2015) Hey guys, I know it's been over half a year since I've updated, so I decided that since I previously had such little experience with writing , compared to what I know now, I would restart this story.
The reason for the rewrite was because I was recently rereading my stories, and a lot of their storylines were jumbled, plot points were random, many characters were OOC (Out of character) and the dialog was awkward most of the time.
Don't Worry! It will still have the same story! Just some things will change. Nothing to drastic, but just minor things that never made sense!
Anyways enough of my explanations, here is the redone first chapter of the new 2.0 version of "5 Seconds"
Review please!
I stared at the clock behind the train station. Why was there one there? Slowly, like entering a trance, my curiousness was focused on something more intriguing than clock placement.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Time… what a peculiar thing. Something that seems to never stop, as well as never exist in the first place. Like air, we need it. Like murderers, we hate it. Why do we hate it? Maybe it's because it never slows, never adapts to our ever changing lives and schedules. How could we let 2 hands determine our futures, and eventually our pasts? Like time, our argument is never ending. Like a clock, our bickers are a full circle.
Wow.
What a peculiar thing…
"Alright, everybody zettle down!" Vitaly's masculine booming voice yelled over the various animals outside of the "Circus Zargoza" train carts. In response, they stopped their afro party, filled with vibrant colors and fake strands of vibrant hair that seemed to flow with the wind, and looked up at Vitaly. We all sat behind the train station under the night sky. No one would check on us this late at night.
"Ve vould not be here, in America, on our own train vithout help from Alex and his friends!" he said as he turned to gesture to us.
Drawn out from my seemingly endless thoughts, I looked around myself. Everyone was staring at me with such great respect, and admiration. All I had to give was a small smile, which was all I could give. Out of all the people, the "cute" and "adorable" puppies, and the goofy sea lion known as Stephano, Gia stood out in my eyes. Her Coffee brown, elegant eyes and her blue necklace that sparkled with importance, just shone out of the entire crowd.
"CrakaLakin!" Marty shouted in triumph for cheating death for the billionth time. Me, Marty, Melman, and Gloria all huddled together and shared a group hug, which was not uncommon as we did all the time, and suddenly we were all cheering. "Ummph!" I grunted as an object ran into my stomach. Immediately I felt the need to let go of the grasp on my food.
I looked down and saw none other than the flying sea lion, Stephano, hugging me tightly around my waist, and I forgot about my need to barf.
With a smile, and a firm grasp, I lifted him up and onto my shoulders. He looked down at me, and in that split nanosecond I could see the gratitude in his eyes.
Is this what heroes feel like? Was I a savior? Well, I mean, I guess I did save his life. No! of course not it was just me doing something for a friend. Right? Almost immediately, Stephano started to cry in my mane.
Yep. Technically I saved his life. But I can't be prideful. My father always told me that.
As Stephanos tears began to soak into me, he picked up his head, and looked at me again.
"You're my hero Alice." He whispered.
I smiled at him, not knowing what to say. As I finally mangled words together, and was ready to share them with him, he reached down and grabbed my hand and shoved it up in the sky. For the first 5 seconds, I was confused and concerned, until the other animals began to triumphantly raise their fist in victory as well. On instinct, my fingers tensed and folded into a fist as we began to cheer.
But I couldn't do it by myself. Gia helped me.
I saw her swing forward. Like we were one, I did an almost perfect backflip and connected to her sweet smelling, soft paws.
I lied to her when I first arrived here. I told her I was a American Trapezeist that would Trapeze over a lake full of swimming "Water Cobras" and then narrowly escape with a jetback and deliver balloons to the people of New York City. I'm surprised she believed me. It was already a stretch to have a Lion be able to trapeze, and let alone be known throughout America, but to add all of the adlibbed and seemingly idiotic extras? I wasn't sure if I could believe myself!
But as we free-fell to the hard pavement of the New York Zoo, without any practice or net, I knew Me and her would be together until the end.
Then I realized that she saw something in me. Something no one else could when we first met. She gave up her safety by letting me on the train. I guess I was about to do the same.
But I did it… I survived long enough to tell my tales, and here I am, watching Stephano cry desperately into my mane.
His eyes were heavy and he was about to pass out. I couldn't blame him. After all of this excitement tonight I'm surprised that no one's heart exploded out of their chest!
I cradled him like a baby.
"What are you doing?" he barely muttered out.
"Just go to sleep. It's okay Stephano." His eyes immediately shut and he was out cold, mostly from all the adrenaline that coursed through his body before this. I tried to drift away from the party undetected.
"Hey Alex! Where ya goin?" I heard Marty shout to me.
"Evidently," I said as I turned around to face the looks of everyone's concerned faces. I looked at the same clock that hung over the building," its ol' water lion's bedtime." I said with a smile as I started walking towards the carts. Everyone behind me now giggling as I entered his ghostly, ancient room that was covered in newspaper clippings about how Vitaly and every one of the members were part of the once, and newly great show. That was old news. It's practically a tradition.
I gently laid Stephano in his bed and tucked him in.
"Thanks Alice." I heard him say.
"For what?" I asked as I backed up from his bed.
"For saving me, and for everything you've done to this circus."
"I'm just helping a friend." I answered as I spun his rolling chair.
"You've done more than help..." Apparently this meant a lot for him.
"We'll talk more tomorrow, just get some sleep. Okay buddy?"
"Okay Alice good night!"
"Good night..." I got up and immediately started to feel dizzy. Why. I felt tired as well. What was happening?
I eventually got out of the room and faced the night sky. Not wanting to return the party I started to head to my room.
It couldn't be an allergic reaction. I have no allergies… hmmm maybe it's just old age? But I'm not even that old! I'm barely in my prime. I don't underst-
"Alex?" a voice said at the entrance of my door.
Based on my cat like reflexes, I jumped and slammed my head into the roof. That's not going to help the dizziness…
"Ow!" I yelled as I frantically turned around to see those coffee brown eyes, I've learned to love. "Gia? What are you doing here you should be with the animals!" I said as I nursed my head.
"Yes, but party become boring." She responded in her Italian accent.
"Well why is that?" I asked her as the pain in my head began to die down.
"You weren't there!" She answered sweetly. I had to admit I did have a crush on her... I mean who wouldn't? She was so pretty, and talented, and... everything. Just… wow. I felt my cheeks burn up, but it was obviously from my head pain right? It was just the feeling of my blood returning to my face.
So caught up in my thoughts I never noticed that I began to walk towards my bed ready for sleep.
"Where you going?" She asked me. Oh no! I didn't respond! She's going to think I'm a jerk! I couldn't tell her I was going to go to sleep! She would think I was trying to get her to leave. She'll never like me! Oh um… I'll just uh, Play it off! Yeah that could work!
"Umm I'm…"
Frantically looking around to find something that I could use to disguise the fact I was going to sleep, I found an old practicing outfit, that she gave to me a while back, resting on the nightstand next to my bed. Personally I would've preferred to wear the gold and red spandex for our shows instead of that awful incandescent paint I was forced to wear in my mane. I grabbed it and quickly spun around.
"Going to practice!" I answered with enthusiasm as I found a way to avoid the uncomfortableness that was threatening to arise.
"Oh! I'll go with you!" she quickly chimed in.
"Oh um alright!" I said a little off guard, but excited nonetheless.
So there we went off to practice, but I doubted anything would be better than the jetpack stuff...
Well it couldn't hurt to try!
