Tom Imura never wanted to be a martyr.
Frankly, he thought martyrs were stupid.
Noble, glorious, and utterly stupid.
After becoming one himself, he realized maybe that wasn't the best definition.
But it was a little late for that.
And besides, no one but Benny knew.
Benny, for his part, thought Tom had gotten it maybe two-thirds right.
Noble? Fifty fucking checks for that.
Glorious? If getting shot in the back can ever count as glorious, then yes, check.
Utterly stupid? He'd never admit it to Tom, but no, not in the least.
(Not that it was exactly warrior smart.)
He did, in his weaker moments,
think it could easily be applied to the townspeople.
His brother's death, just to get them to live.
So fucking stupid, but utterly predictable.
Tom Imura never wanted to be a noble goddamn martyr.
It's just too bad that nobody ever saw him as anything but.
